File wouldn't open on my Win 10 pc. After may tries the win gui file opened but when I clicked on the tweaks tab it could not find my Sony camera. I connected and reconnected the camera several times.

My wife bought this $750 camera in Tokyo and assumed we would be able to switch it to English when she got home. I could not find the English language setting in the menu. She did a search of Japanese websites and they all stated this was a Japanese only version of this camera; it was not the international version. She was very sad to read this.

Almost! I can go until 'Main Settings' by following the little pictures icons. From there, I have no idea, since everything is in Japanese writing (kanji). Can you be a little bit more specific? Thank you so much!

Has anybody ever changed the language in a Sony Camcorder? I am looking for a way to change the language in a japanese Sony HDR-GW88 camcorder. Is there any Solution? I started the PCMA-GUI and the camera is regognized but there is no way further option available.

Even though the menu is in a different language, the steps to access the language menu remain the same. However, the menu path for changing the language settings may differ, depending on the camera you are using.

Hi all. I just purchased the RX100 II from a company that stated that they were "Proudly Australian" I have since found out that it ships from Hong Kong. Problem is I have a brand new Rx100 II in Japanese or Chinese, The company Camerasky.com.au is no help at all changing the language to English. I have been told by Sony Australia that maybe it cannot be changed. That it is for the Asian market only. Has anyone had the same problem and if yes how did they solve it?
Hope someone can help

Cheers

It's just a way of protecting home resellers from the grey market.

The other issue is that sometimes the camera is cheapper because the duties have not been paid on it.

HI All

I have had this problem and was about to return the camera as there was no way I could understand the Japanese in order to be able to change the language settings

I spent 40 minutes on the phone to Sony support in the UK and by just counting the number of times to scroll up and down we sorted the problem and changed the language to English

You need to switch on camera, press menu button and scroll to setup (spanner) then scroll down until you get to a symbol that starts with the letter "A" in what seems to be a text box. If you select this you will find an option to change to English or other languages

I hope that this helps

Excellent housecalluk.

The question remains, does Sony ship the RX 100 in one version that is pre setup for a local language or do they have multiple versions in multiple languages?

HELP, I just bought a made in Japan rx100 from Japan via eBay. I found the toolbox but don't see the boxed "A" anywhere. I've pressed each option within the toolbox also but English never comes up. This is the only forum with owners who have had success switching to English language. Even everyone on dpreview.com says it's not possible to switch to English

Yep, the instructions worked perfectly for my RX100. It should be the second one down in the 3rd spanner menu.
However, looking at the DPR thread, it seems there is a model marketed in Japan that has only the Japanese language.
You should be able to use it ok on defaults, I guess. Numerals are common world wide for setting aperture and + or minus ev. Not a great solution, I know.

Phew....! Thank you Flickr Family. Just like John Hunt I bought an RX100 from the 'Australian' company Camera Sky. The camera arrived this morning, once again in Chinese / Japanese. I phoned them and googled the settings. This thread saved me.

I would like to make a comment about those people that have had Sony RX100 cameras that had the Japanese menu on them. In regards to changing the menu from Japanese to English. I am thinking about buying one from Ebay that is in Japanese. So I called Sony tech suppose this afternoon and talked to somebody. Here is what he told me. On the bottom of the camera where it gives the model number, if it says made in Japan then the language can't be changed. If it says USA on the bottom than it can be changed. I would be curious to know how many of these camera that are or were in Japanese have USA on the bottom of them vs. Japan.

Hi All

My camera says made in China on the bottom, but I think the language was Japanese. However the 'spanner' menu does not have a spanner at the heading but a toolbox (rather like various television settings which is how I recognised it). Other than that it is in menu no 3 and the option to change is in the boxed A section. Also like others, thank goodness for the English option.

However, I still have a japanese instruction leaflet and the english download is big even when printed 2 pages to each A4.

Like some of the others in this thread I was about to send the Sony RX100 2 back.
However, within minutes going through the set up menu I found "English" and confirmed.
So elated that I don't renember where exactly it was.
Camera is made in China, not sure which language it was set to when I got it.
Thanks a lot.

I signed up to Flickr just to say thank you for helping me out with this issue. I purchased a barely used RX100 and everything was in Japanese, and I was stressing out to say the least. Thanks again for the help guys, I'm loving this camera already.

My problem is slightly different. I have a US version of RX100 V. I would like to get a .pdf of a CHINESE language owner's manual. I have searched the net pretty hard but no luck. Anyone have one, or have a link?

My Sony DSC-W800 seems to be frozen on language setting and I am unble to get beyond this setting. I have tried to a restore to factory settings but this not work either. Can anyone help me urgently please

I recently purchased a Sony A7III from Japan. and as some of you know, Sony cameras do not have language settings on them, when they are bought from Japan. I am quite competent with the camera (even with it set in a different language) I mainly bought it from here because the price difference was justifiable.

Anyway, I found the amazing guide on this site ( -view.com/faqs/sony-hack/languages) to help replace the camera language files. I was able to extract the firmware files (Funny enough Ive tried many versions of the fw-tool and none of them would extract the file, except the GUI one.) the extractor gave me the 4 files, one of which is the FDAT file the contains the actual firmware and as you can imagine the file is encrypted and thats where I am stuck now!

I realize it might be against the rules to ask for this, but any "tips" or direction on how to extract the fdat file would be highly appreciated? the guide says to google but I am afraid my google skills aren't as good as I thought they were. I apologize in advance if this is breaking any rules.

I apologize in advance for the necroposting (or a sort of). But I bought used Sony Nex-5 just 2 weeks ago. This is the version for the Japanese region without the ability to change the language. I have searched many forums and resources in an attempt to change it. I know it was possible in the past, but at the moment all the links are outdated and I can't find the patcher (I believe that is the only way to deal with J1 version).

There were patchers on the old, now defunct sites, and on the old forums they claim that the nex-5 patcher only changes 6 bytes and 3 bytes of the checksum. Therefore, I concluded that it is more correct not to replace string resources, but to correct the language or region definition code.

I installed the IDA disassembler and began to study the main file. I am a programmer, but my knowledge is not enough to find the right piece of code. Please, can someone still have a patcher for nex-5 or nex-3, please share. Firmware that would change the language - it doesn't matter to Russian or English will go as well. It does not matter if the firmware is obsolete (the last version is 5, but any working Russian/English will work).

Or maybe one of the developers remembers the keyword or the name of the function that the patcher changed? I'll be very grateful for any clue. I haven't been able to sleep for two weeks now because I'm sure a hack is possible, but I can't seem to find a clue.

I've already tried everything I could. I searched for files on ftp, on Chinese search engines, on other networks. I started looking for people who wrote posts about successful firmware, but many of them were online 5 years ago. I beg you. Please help. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I also examined that russian forum in details but, alas, this patcher does not work with Nex-5 firmware as it is. I suppose there is internal check for a model number.
Still it is of huge value because it allows to understand which bytes should be patched and how.

So I downloaded Nex-3 firmware, and successfully applied this patcher. Next I used fwtool to unpack both original and patched firmware, got main executables, compared them with winmerge, found the offsets where the patch was actually applied.

Next I decompiled both mains with IDA, jumped to found offsets and saw the code differences. That code just allocates a list of constants in memory. Patch replaces all 9 or so constants by one (3A18DA00). I think that are the offsets where language data is located for all possible languages, so that now all languages refer to just one, possibly english.
