INHALTSANGABE

Jahre nach dem aufwühlenden Einbruch in sein Haus führt der blinde Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) inzwischen wieder ein geruhsames Leben. Dabei kümmert er sich mittlerweile sogar väterlich um ein junges Mädchen namens Phoenix (Madelyn Grace), dem er nach einer schweren Tragödie ein neues Zuhause gab. Doch dauert es nicht lange, bis diese selbst geschaffene Idylle ihr jähes Ende findet: Eine Bande Unbekannter hat es auf das Mädchen abgesehen, entführt es kurzerhand und lässt das Haus des Blinden in Flammen aufgehen. Das will der natürlich nicht auf sich sitzen lassen. Um seinen Schützling aus den Fängen der Kidnapper in einer ihm unbekannten Umgebung zu befreien, muss sich der Kriegsveteran einmal mehr auf seine anderen Sinne und seine Instinkte verlassen – und mit seinen Widersachern kurzen Prozess machen.

In „Don’t Breathe“ von „Evil Dead“-Regisseur Fede Alvarez bricht eine Diebesbande in Erwartung leichter Beute bei einem alleinlebenden blinden alten Mann ein, nur um dann festzustellen, dass der Kriegsveteran sein Augenlicht offenbar gar nicht braucht, um den naseweisen jungen Leuten mal anständig die Leviten zu lesen. Eine ziemlich coole Idee – und dank der grandiosen körperlichen Präsenz von „Avatar“-Bösewicht Stephen Lang wirkt das Ganze auch noch erstaunlich glaubhaft. Der verdiente Lohn waren überwiegend begeisterte Kritiken (wir selbst haben starke 4 Sterne vergeben) sowie ein weltweites Einspielergebnis von etwa 157 Millionen Dollar, was dem 16-Fachen (!) des Budgets entspricht!

Obwohl das Publikum dabei die Perspektive der Einbrechenden einnimmt, drückt man die meiste Zeit über dem wehrhaften Hausbesitzer die Daumen – erst nach zwei Dritteln gibt es einen Twist, der die Sympathien noch mal ganz neu verteilt: Der namenlose Mann hält nämlich eine von ihm gegen ihren Willen geschwängerte junge Frau in seinem Keller gefangen. Nach dieser Vorgeschichte war es doch eine ziemliche Überraschung zu erfahren, dass der blinde Mann im Sequel „Don’t Breathe 2“, mit dem „Evil Dead“-Autor Rodo Sayagues sein Regiedebüt gibt, plötzlich nicht mehr als Antagonist, sondern als (heldenhafter) Protagonist fungieren soll. Wie soll das bloß funktionieren? Ganz einfach: Man lässt vieles aus dem Vorgänger einfach unter den Tisch fallen…

Nachdem es mit dem Schwängern junger Frauen nicht hingehauen hat, findet der inzwischen nicht mehr namenlose Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) doch noch eine Ersatz-Tochter – und zwar buchstäblich auf der Straße, wo sie nach einem Hausbrand bewusstlos herumliegt. Acht Jahre später hat er die nun elfjährige Phoenix (Madelyn Grace), die ihn für ihren leiblichen Vater hält, zu einer regelrechten Survival-Expertin herangezogen. Norman hat allerdings noch immer so viel Angst, noch eine Tochter zu verlieren, dass er Phoenix nicht nur selbst unterrichtet, er lässt sie auch sonst kaum mal allein das Haus verlassen.

Aber es kommt, wie es kommen muss: Eines Nachts dringt eine von Meth-Dealer Raylan (Brendan Sexton III) angeführte Verbrecherbande in das Haus ein – und obwohl nicht nur Norman alles gibt, sondern sich auch Phoenix extrem clever und abgeklärt anstellt, nehmen die Eindringlinge das Mädchen letztendlich einfach mit. Zurück bleibt der fälschlicherweise für tot gehaltene Norman, der wirklich alles zu opfern bereit ist, um seine „Tochter“ wiederzubekommen!

Rache-Action statt Horror-Schocker

Im ersten Film wurde Stephan Lang noch wie der übermenschliche Killer in einem Slasher-Film eingesetzt – quasi wie ein blinder Michael Myers. Die Rolle hat der Schauspieler dann auch einfach mit seiner schieren körperlichen Präsenz weggerockt. Bei der Fortsetzung hat sich Lang nun allerdings – unter anderem mit der Hilfe eines Behindertenverbandes – tiefer auf den Part vorbereitet, etwa um die speziellen Manierismen blinder Menschen authentisch abbilden zu können. Zudem hat er nicht mehr diese tiefe, alles dominierende Stimme. Sein Organ ist stattdessen ganz sanft, heiser, irgendwie gebrochen. Beides macht die Figur eigentlich nur noch interessanter – und deshalb ist es besonders schade, dass ihre abgründigeren Seiten im Sequel einfach unter den Teppich gekehrt werden.

Fast noch auffälliger als der Wechsel des Protagonisten ist aber vielleicht der des Genres: Statt als Horror-Schocker erweist sich „Don’t Breathe 2“ eher als Rache-Actioner mit vereinzelten Horror-Einschüben. Nun lässt sich schwer sagen, ob es an dieser Veränderung liegt oder ob der bisherige Drehbuchautor Association Rodo Sayagues vielleicht eben auch einfach nicht so ein guter Regisseur ist wie Fede Alvarez, aber auf jeden Fall erreicht das Sequel nie diese gnadenlose Intensität, die den Vorgänger noch ausgezeichnet hat. Das ist handwerklich alles gut gemacht, gerade die Ausleuchtung ist klasse, aber der letzte Funken springt in den Home-Invasion-Momenten diesmal einfach nicht über. Dafür gibt es allerdings einige besonders schön-fiese Einfälle …

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider.
