Just a few films you may find of interest (rated * to ****)

Saturday 1703
*** BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (US 1969) C14, 1210-1420; Paul
Newman, Robert Redford, Katherine Ross; Loses sparkle on TV, but you
can still revel in excellent performances, a biting – and bitingly
funny – screenplay by William Goldman, and a varied score (including
"Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", sung by B.J. Thomas).
**½ BATMAN (US 1966) C15, 1300-1505; Adam West, Burt Ward, Burgess
Meredith, Cesar Romero; Not Tim Burton's gothic melodrama but the film
of the 'Bam!!', 'Smash!!" TV series. Holy unnecessary revivals Batman!
*** LORD OF THE FLIES (UK 1963) C2, 2300-0030; James Aubrey, Hugh
Edwards, Tom Chapin; Very good version of William Golding's 1954 novel
about public schoolboys who survive a plane crash and turn savage on a
desert island. Occasional humour results from the film's innocence,
but its descriptive study of disintegration amongst the boys is
straight from Golding. Written and directed by Peter Brook on a
miniscule budget with a totally non-professional cast.
*** BESIEGED / L'Assedio (Italian 1998) C2, 0100-0230; Thandie Newton,
David Thewlis, Claudio Santamaria; Any synopsis of Bernardo
Bertolucci's film hardly makes for thrills, fun, romance, or even
drama, but it works passionately as a beautiful, carefully crafted
story of TN and DT being together, in the sense that she earns money
by cleaning his rooms (she's Kenyan and escaped the military
government there and moved to Rome). If you like a beginning, middle,
and end that you can follow, you may be less than enamoured of
Bertolucci's work anyway.

Sunday 1803
**½ A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (UK/US 1972) C24, 2335-0225; Malcolm McDowell,
Patrick Magee, Adrienne Corri, Aubrey Morris.

Monday 1903
**½ A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (UK/US 1972) C24, 2200-0050; Malcolm McDowell,
Patrick Magee, Adrienne Corri, Aubrey Morris.

Friday 2303
**½ BATMAN (US 1966) C15, 1650-1855; Adam West, Burt Ward, Burgess
Meredith, Cesar Romero; Not Tim Burton's gothic melodrama but the film
of the 'Bam!!', 'Smash!!" TV series. Holy unnecessary revivals Batman!
*** THE VISITOR (US 2007) C2, 2400-0135; Richard Jenkins, Hiam Abbass,
Haaz Sleiman; A uni professor(RJ) discovers that two illegal
immigrants (one from Syria, one from Senegal) are living in the NY
flat he rents. The beauty of Tom McCarthy's film is that RK doesn’t
throw them out – instead, all the protagonists learn from each other,
and RJ even helps them when one is arrested
**½ NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (US 2004) C4, 0035-0210 (C13, 0135-0310); Jon
Heder, Tina Majorino, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Haylie
Duff; Misogynist indie film in which a teen living in a small town in
Ohio is picked on at school but takes up with a Mexican boy and a shy
girl.
The spin-off cartoon series is running Tuesday nights at 2230 on C28
(2330 on C29).
