John Mills, Mylène Demongeot, Eric Pohlmann; DB as you'll never see
him anywhere else: as a bandit swaggering around a dusty Mexican
village in leather trousers!
** DEEP END (UK/US/West German 1970) C15, 0020-0205; Jane Asher, John
Moulder-Brown, Diana Dors, Michael Vogler; Director Jerzy
Skolomowski's film is a strange animal which becomes more surreal and
less intelligible, as JM starts his first job as a public swimming
pool attendant, and quickly becomes infatuated with colleague JA.

Lonsdale, Géraldine Pailhas; In 2003, a couple(VB, SP) are divorced,
but then go to a hotel for sex. It sounds like yer average French
reality show, but the couple's life is actually being seen back to
front in retrospect.

McGoohan, Herbert Lom, William Hartnell, Sean Connery, Sid James,
Gordon Jackson, David McCallum, Peggy Cummins, Jill Ireland, Alfie
Bass; Never mind the plot (lorry drivers competing with each other),
feel the cast... where else would the first screen James Bond, the
first Doctor Who, a Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Prisoner, and Sid James
be together?
*** THE BLUE BUTTERFLY / Le Papillon Bleu (Canadian 2004) C31,
1310-1505; William Hurt, Pascale Bussières, Marc Donato, Marianella
Jiminez; WH's a famous naturalist who's persuaded to take a disabled
little boy(MD) on his latest expedition to the rainforests. As this is
a true story, you expect a glutinous confection wherein people hug
each other every few minutes, but this stars Hurt and Bussières, so
mawkishness is kept to a minimum. The pay-off may be obvious from the
start, but the Costa Rica settings, the performances, and Leá Pool's
direction keep it lively.
**½ LAWN DOGS (UK 1997) C1EW, 0005-0145; C1S, 0035-0215; Sam Rockwell,
Mischa Barton, Kathleen Quinlan, Christopher McDonald; On a suburban
housing estate in Kentucky, young SR, who mows the lawns for the
moneyed families, befriends lonely 10-year-old MB. A variably fun,
slow, intelligent independent British film directed by John Duigan
** KILLER OF SHEEP (US 1977) C15, 0210-0350; Henry Gayle Sanders,
Kaycee Moore, Angela Burnett, Jack Drummond; Made by students then at
UCLA, this monochrome cheapie is really a series of sequences set in
an L.A. ghetto. The ambience of the whole film is credible, but it's a
matter of taste as to whether you'll actually find it
interesting!

Giovanni Ribisi, Remo Girone, Mattia Sbragia; In Italy, Englishwoman
CB plants a bomb intending to kill a man selling drugs to
schoolchildren, but the explosion kills others instead. Very slowly-
paced film directed by Tom Tryker, who was responsible for one of the
fastest-paced recent ones – "Run Lola Run".
