I had high hopes going into this one because Robert Eggers' first two films were favorites of mine. The Witch had one of my favorite third acts in recent memory and The Lighthouse was just a total blast of a freakout.
Crazy to think that after a movie like The Lighthouse this guy was able to get real ass funding for a viking epic.
And what a truly wild vision this thing is. From the first shot to the last, this movie is absolutely going for it. You want to get my attention, open on a volcano with some VO mumbling about literally Odin. Throw in Bjork as a seer, Willem Defoe as a spirit guide, and yes Anya Taylor-Joy as anything at all. Frame after frame this movie looks like thousand year old drawings come to life.
After, I read this
New Yorker profile of Eggers and the making of this movie. It made me appreciate what I just watched even more *because* you don't need to know any of the context for it to be good. I don't want to get banned again for talking mess about comic book movies but what I will say is that it does seem like the fan-homework element is at this point necessary for the payoff. You need to be following the trail of breadcrumbs before during and after.
Whereas The Northman works on its own, and if you find out everything that went into it--before or after watching it--it only gets better.
I have doubts as to whether this director will get to work on this scale again, so I'll be seeing this in the theater again while I have the chance.
