The eighteenth edition of the Choreographic Coding Lab (CCL) will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from August 18 to 22, 2025. This edition is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Luiz Naveda (UEMG – School of Music / Corpuslab / Postgraduate Program in Arts - PPGARTES), and co-organized by Prof. Dr. Gabriela Christófaro (UFMG – Graduate program in Dance). The event is supported by the interdisciplinary research initiative Motion Bank, based at Mainz University of Applied Sciences (Germany). Members of the Corpuslab Research Group will support the local organization and hosting.

Please note: there will also be another CCL in Mainz, Germany, in September for which there will be a separate call soon.

- About the CCL and Motion Bank

The Choreographic Coding Labs (CCLs) are international events that bring together choreographers, artists, technologists, and researchers to investigate movement through digital and computational lenses. The CCL originated as part of the Motion Bank project—founded by choreographer William Forsythe and The Forsythe Company—which set out to explore the creation of digital dance scores for the capture and transmission of choreographic concepts, and the development of new media formats for embodied practices.
Over the past years, the CCL has grown into a vital international platform for transdisciplinary experimentation. In Brazil, this trajectory has been strengthened by remarkable editions led by Júlia Abs (2014, São Paulo) and Thembi Rosa (2016 and 2019, Belo Horizonte), who have significantly contributed to building a sustained network of research and creation at the intersection of dance and code.
CCL 18 continues this path by fostering connections among creators and researchers working with movement, digital systems, computer music, cultural heritage, and design. Emphasizing collaboration, process documentation, and critical exchange, the lab invites proposals that explore new forms of knowledge and aesthetic investigation across disciplinary boundaries shaped by human bodies in movement and the use of code in contemporary artistic practices.
This edition will also include contributions from Motion Bank-associated researchers Anton Koch and Jorge Guevara, expanding the dialogue around digital embodiment and speculative systems in choreographic research.

- Program Overview

The residency will span five days and includes:
• Open-format laboratories focused on choreography, coding, conceptual design, and motion analysis
• Choreographic input sessions giving insight into dance practice and choreographic thinking
• Experimental sessions and alt-conference presentations led by participants
• Activities and field work open to the general public, with hands-on interaction using motion capture, sensors, and other technologies
• Open lectures and a public showcase of prototypes and projects developed during the lab
A digital booklet of abstracts will be published after the event, and selected participants may also be invited to contribute to alternative publication formats, such as interactive essays or audiovisual documentation.
A full program and schedule of activities will be released soon.

- How to Apply

We welcome proposals from artists, choreographers, designers, researchers, developers, musicians, and interdisciplinary practitioners. Applications should include a short bio and a proposal (up to 300 words) describing your interests or a project you wish to develop during the lab. Individual and team proposals are welcome.
• Deadline for applications: July 15, 2025
• Contact: luiz....@uemg.br
• Participation is free of charge
• Languages: Portuguese, English, and Spanish
• Application form: https://choreographiccoding.org/calls#call423

- Selection Process and Criteria

A maximum of 25 participants will be selected by a committee formed by members of the organizing and research teams. Applications will be assessed based on the relevance of the proposal, the applicant’s background, and their potential contribution to the lab’s collaborative and transdisciplinary environment. Selected participants will be notified by June 25, 2025.
