Dear MoveIt! and ROS users,

I wanted to give you information about how MoveIt! will be dealing with the new ROS distro Indigo.

Based on feedback from the MoveIt! survey conducted last year and prior experience from the PR2, we know that most robots seem to lag the most recent ROS release by a significant time period (a year or more sometimes). We would like to encourage MoveIt! adoption on more and more robots and also give people time to catch up but still be able to use the newest features in MoveIt! with their robot. We have used this information to formulate our strategy around ROS Indigo (at least in the near-term).

We will not branch and develop separately for Indigo. The version of MoveIt! in Indigo will be a near copy of that in Hydro. New features, bug-fixes, etc. will continue to go into Hydro - there are almost always ways to do this without having to break API and we will try to maintain API stability. Everything new that is being released into Hydro will also be ported into Indigo releases. This will allow both users working with the latest distributions and users working with older distributions to keep using MoveIt!.

Let me know if there are any questions/comments about this.

Best Regards,
Sachin

Are there any expected API breakages in the horizon?.

Adolfo.

THANK YOU! This is really great news. We're *almost* done porting most
of our stuff to Hydro, so I'm glad that work will pay off for a little
bit longer. :-)

Cheers,
Martin

I didn't check the RE:, and so this didn't go to the moveit mailing list as I intended:

So. are you still planning to do this? It seems that new releases have not been released to Hydro debs for a while, which is causing some confusion (for instance, https://github.com/ros-planning/moveit_commander/pull/19#issuecomment-44034654)

Hello Sachin,
thanks very much for developing such a tool.
I wanted to ask, whether the repository for indigo the same for hydro is. Since a:
sudo apt-get install ros-hydro-moveit-full
doesn't find anything (I have Indigo on my PC) I suppose that the only repository available till nos are those here.

Could you confirm?
Regards

Hi Davide,

Since you're using Indigo, that means you're on Ubuntu Saucy or Trusty,
right? I assume you've already followed the instructions here:

http://wiki.ros.org/indigo/Installation/Ubuntu

You won't find a package "ros-hydro-moveit-full" on Ubuntu Saucy or
Trusty, since ROS Hydro is not available for those Ubuntu versions,
unfortunately. All your ROS packages should start with "ros-indigo".

Normally I would assume there should be a metapackage called
"ros-indigo-moveit-full", but I can't find it at the moment. So just
install the necessary packages separately:

sudo apt-get install ros-indigo-moveit-commander ros-indigo-moveit-planners ros-indigo-moveit-plugins ros-indigo-moveit-ros ros-indigo-moveit-setup-assistant

If you're missing something later, you can also check whether there
are any uninstalled ros-indigo-moveit-* packages and install them too.

Best,
Martin
