The Mount Washington listserv was started in March of 2005 and now includes over 1,000 members. To maintain its usefulness, there are some guidelines for participation and rules of etiquette. Due to Google Group changes, these guidelines are no longer sent automatically to everyone who joins, so we are sending them as a reminder to the entire list.

To send a message to the listserv, address it to Mount-Washington@googlegroups.com.
To unsubscribe, send an email to Mount-Washington+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com.
To make changes to your account, visit this group at https://groups.google.com/g/mount-washington and click on "my membership settings".

A few guidelines for participation:

Do not use the listserv to solicit business.
Only send messages that are of direct relevance to the neighborhood.
If you are replying to a long message (or to a digest), conserve space by deleting all parts of the original message that are not relevant to your posting.
Please include your first and last name and street in Mt. Washington in each message so that other members can identify you.

Rules of etiquette (VERY IMPORTANT):

This listserv is run as an open forum for neighbors and postings are not screened. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to maintain a high degree of civility at all times. Although we don't always agree on the details, we all want the same thing – a clean, safe, friendly, and enriching place to live. Please keep this in mind and avoid posting any comments that may cause personal offense to other members or cast doubt on their commitment to these noble ideals. Members who consistently violate this rule will be removed from the group.

If you reply to a message on the listserv, your reply may automatically be sent to the entire group. This is intentional, since it maintains the conversational feel of the list. However, it requires vigilance on the part of all users in order to avoid clogging members' inboxes with irrelevant posts. If you want to reply to just one individual, ensure that they are the only ones in the To: field of your message (if Mount-Washington@googlegroups.com is in this field, delete it). If you have a question of a personal nature (e.g., looking to borrow something or seeking detailed information that is unlikely to interest the other 999 members), make sure to include your own e-mail address in your message and ask people to reply to you off-list. Answers to informal surveys should always be sent off-list.

The list has received many requests for recommendations for a variety of service providers (home repair, landscaping, tailoring, car maintenance, etc…). Before sending out a request of your own, check the archives by going to the web site (https://groups.google.com/g/mount-washington ) and entering your search term (eg., "piano teacher") in the box on the top of the screen.

Membership on the listserv is limited to residents of Mount Washington. (Everyone who requests membership is asked for their name and address before they can join.) Since this is not an official site of the MWIA, we don't enforce strict boundaries; if someone lives a block or two out of MWIA bounds but wants to participate in our on-line community, then they are welcome to join. We also don't kick members off when they move away. However, we occasionally receive requests for membership from individuals who are considering moving to the neighborhood and seeking advance real estate posts or who just want to get the flavor of the place. Although it pains us to do so, we deny all those requests. Please do not encourage non-residents to join.

Avoid posting information of a personal nature (such as neighbors' phone numbers) without first receiving their permission. No photos of minors, please.

If you are not sure whether something is appropriate for posting, e-mail one of us.

If you are overwhelmed by the volume of e-mail, you can go to the listserv web site (appended to the bottom of all e-mails) and change your membership settings to "digest" (one compendium received more or less daily) or "no e-mail". In the latter case, you can still go to the web site and read posts so long as you maintain your membership.

This listserv is run purely as a service to the community and is not affiliated with the Mount Washington Improvement Association, though the MWIA does use it to publicize meetings and sponsored events. The listserv managers are not responsible for the content of postings to the MW listserv.
