Subject: Petition to Senator Cantwell

Dear Grazing Team Colleagues:

One goal of the Sierra Club Grazing Team's lobby event last June was to begin discussions with Senators about sponsoring a companion bill to Rep. Adam Smith's Rural Economic Vitalization Act. By the end of the event I had concluded that the Senator who we should pursue most strongly in this regard is Washington's Senator Maria Cantwell.

Rather than continuing directly with private discussions with Cantwell's aides, I decided to pursue a new tactic: building a grassroots constituency in support of Cantwell sponsoring the legislation. Toward that end, I have directed my lobbying partner of last June, Shelly Bristow of Washington state, to install an online petition for that purpose. You can access the petition at

Please note that the petition is not a Sierra Club endorsed effort. If it becomes one, I'll let you know.

But to the best of my knowledge it blazes a new path for dealing with members of Congress as regards the sponsoring of legislation.
