Maryland and three other mid-Atlantic states sit atop 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas trapped in Marcellus Shale. It is a clean source of energy that could reduce dependence on dirty coal and foreign oil. However, current experiences in Marcellus Shale drilling and extraction have revealed a wide range of serious negative issues underestimated by government, the industry and even environmentalists. Come learn about how the rapid development of the Marcellus Shale industry has overwhelmed communities with negative impacts and serious quality of life issue

GASLAND is a film by documentary filmmaker Josh Fox who embarks on a cross-country Pennsylvania odyssey uncovering secrets, lies and tap water which lights on fire. The result is a film that is part travelogue, part expose, part bluegrass banjo meltdown.

A diverse panel of experts follows the film and will speak on the various subjects surrounding the issue of Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction, explore and answer questions about the science of Hydro-fracking, addressing the legislative and regulatory concerns, as well as effects to the environment and quality of life of local residents.

Natural gas companies have already filed permits for permission to drill Marcellus Shale in Garret and Allegany counties of western Maryland. Marcellus Shale drilling raises very complex challenges. If done correctly it may be a source of economic activity, yielding clean fossil fuel. If done incorrectly it will cost Marylanders millions of dollars in environmental degradation and create the industrialization of scenic mountain Maryland.
