We found that SHAREit generates vdex/odex files after dex2oat when first launched. The app then loads these files directly in subsequent running. An attacker may craft a fake vdex/odex file, then replace those files via the abovementioned vulnerability to perform code execution.
It also provides a feature that can install an APK with the file name suffix sapk. This feature can be used to install a malicious app; if such is the case, it will enable a limited RCE when the user clicks on a URL.
To verify whether the above functionality is available in the Google Chrome browser, we built an href attribute in HTML. When the user clicks this download URL, Chrome will call SHAREit to download the sapk from Since it supports the HTTP protocol, this sapk can be replaced by simulating a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack.
The reason for the unsuccessful operation through Chrome is that the browser intercepts this request. By reverse engineering, we found out that Chrome did discard content/file scheme Intent due to security concerns.
Even if the download and installation of APK by Chrome deep link were not successful, the same attack can still be performed by downloading the APK from an arbitrary URL and Install APK under an arbitrary path by using this code via a malicious app locally:
SHAREit is also susceptible to a man-in-the-disk (MITD) attack. This Is because when a user downloads the app in the download center, it goes to the directory as shown in the sample code. The folder is an external directory, which means any app can access it with SDcard write permission.
To illustrate, we manually copied Twitter.apk in the code to replace it with a fake file of the same name. As a result, a pop-up of the fake Twitter app will appear on the main screen of the SHAREit app.
Looking through this file shows that the download URLs are not only from Google Play, but also from other vendors. Most of the URLs use the HTTP protocol, and it is very dangerous to transfer data without encryption as these can be tampered with by a MitM attacker.

Today I installed ShareIt Windows software from ShareIt official site. Software installed correctly without any issue, but when I opened it, I am getting prompt "The port 55283 was occupied". Multiple unpatched vulnerabilities have been discovered in SHAREit, a popular app with over one billion downloads, that could be abused to leak a user's sensitive data, execute arbitrary code, and possibly lead to remote code execution.
"We decided to disclose our research three months after reporting this since many users might be affected by this attack because the attacker can steal sensitive data and do anything with the apps' permission," Trend Micro researcher Echo Duan said in a write-up. "It is also not easily detectable."
One of the flaws arises from the manner the app facilitates sharing of files (via Android's FileProvider), potentially allowing any third-party to gain temporary read/write access permissions and exploit them to overwrite existing files in the app's data folder.
"When the user clicks this download URL, Chrome will call SHAREit to download the SAPK from ," Duan explained. "Since it supports the HTTP protocol, this SAPK can be replaced by simulating a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack."
Lastly, the app is also susceptible to what's called a man-in-the-disk (MitD) attack, which arises when careless use of "external storage" permissions opens the door to the installation of fraudulent apps and even causes a denial of service condition.
SHAREit has courted a fair of security shortcomings in the past. In February 2019, two vulnerabilities were detected in the app that could allow attackers to bypass authentication, download arbitrary files, and pilfer files from Android devices.
Then on June 29, 2020, the Indian government banned SHAREit along with 58 other Chinese apps over concerns that these apps were engaging in activities that threatened "national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India."
"On February 15, 2021, we became aware of a report by Trend Micro about potential security vulnerabilities in our app," the company said in a statement to The Hacker News via email. "We worked quickly to investigate this report, and on February 19, 2021, we released a patch to address the alleged vulnerabilities."
