All of my cameras are the same except for URL stuff.
Mainly, I want to move all of the info in the camera...conf files into the motion.conf file, like I currently do with pure "motion".
But figured to just simply try something simple first.

Like, changing the name of the camera files from the defaults of "camera-[1-9].conf, etc.
So, edited motion.conf, made that change, but it still wants to load the ones I created thru the motioneye GUI.
If I remove the default cameras (well, not default really, but some I added when first getting it to work), then motion will not load, apparently 'cuz there are no cameras.
motioneye also doesn't give me any inf that motion failed.
motion also doesn't log anything even if I change it's logging level.

Where does motion store/get it's camera definitions?  Got a feeling it might be in that "tasks.pickle" file.

If not, then where?  And how can I manage this thing without the GUI?

Thanks,

Hmmm. The purpose of motionEye is to give the WebGUI Wrapper for motion. If you don't want to use the WebGUI, what are you using motionEye for?
I am just trying to figure your use case. MotionEye moves the motion.conf file from /etc/motion/to /etc/motioneye/, and supervises the activity of motion.

Love it when someone replies and asks why you want your question answered instead of just trying to answer the question.
OK, my use case - motion alone sends each camera to a separate port so you require multiple  browser tabs to see them.
Whereas, motioneye lets me see all of them using a single port.

So, again I ask - why am I unable to manually edit and/or add the camera....conf files?
And, when does motioneye modify the motion.conf and the camera. conf files - during each execution, or only during configuration/add of the cameras?  If only during configuration, then I should be able to modify those files.

And I see no evidence of this following statement.  During execution, motioneye.conf is same as prior to execution, or is this done into ram.
>>>>"MotionEye moves the motion.conf file from /etc/motion/to /etc/motioneye/, and supervises the activity of motion."

Thanks.

On 2nd thought, I think motioneye is probably not for me.  Wanted to give it a try, but just too much trouble to make it work the way I want.
motion alone will satisfy me - been using for a long time.

If that is the only feature you are looking for (seeing all the cameras on the same page) why not write your own simple HTML file to consolidate the views? Because I was trying to help, by first trying to understand what you were looking for, and got a bad reaction, I don't find any need to help you further.

OK.  Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but all I said was basically - I got a question when I only wished for an answer - not alternatives"

Geeeeezzzz!!

Excuse me. I've been doing primary support for motionEye here, on both Githubs, and on FB for more than 2 years.
Sometimes, a user doesn't know the full capabilities of motionEye, or is not really asking the right question. My goal (as part of being in IT Support for 25+ years) is to make sure I understand what you are asking for, and what your goal is. To do so, I ask additional questions, before just throwing things out there, because I know what this program is about.
I apparently touched a nerve in your case, for which I apologize.  I do not believe that what you are wanting needs the wrapper for motion, but a simple HTML page that displays the number of cameras that you are looking for, since you obviously know a lot of how motion works. You could look in the python code to see how motionEye does it (found in both githubs) (and the new Devs are re-writing it to be python 3 compliant) as open source can be a good thing.
Good luck looking elsewhere for your next solution, and my condolences to their support team, if any.

Lord have Mercy really? Then you should ask someone to be simple and direct.

Keep on keeping on, Kevin!  I've watched the demanding, entitled ingrates who can't do it belittle those who can for more than 22 years.  I'm reminded of what Jeff Johnson might say, "Bugger off, troll". ;)

I can't resist - after now being called an ingrate - well I think that was aimed at me.I'm quite old, and I don't remember support people being quite so snippy and sensitive.  I did support when it was on the phone, and the customer could actually yell at me.
Did you not want to answer my simple question because you don't know the answer, or is it just a policy to always deflect from what the user is asking.

BTW, I was a programmer, tech support since 1969; assembly, c, java; mainframe, mini, early pc, lastly IOT.  I did support when it was on the phone, and the customer could actually yell at me (fun!).  I'm quite old, and I don't remember support people being quite so snippy and sensitive.
I do appreciate and advocate Linux and opensource, even motioneye.

So long guys.   Maybe this can be ended now.

Sorry you feel the way you do.  Kevin really has been around providing MotionEyeOS support forever, and I’ve seen him sticking with helping folk long after others would have stopped.  This is not an attack on you, but it is very clear to me that Kevin was only trying to get a grasp on the reported problem before just assuming and giving what may have been useless advise.  I’ve also seen him defer to others who may know a better way, so he also is not a know-it-all.  The snippy and sensitive comment came off to me as finger pointing... the old saying where a person who is pointing at someone has four other fingers point back at them.

Well-said.
Kevin,
I forgot to say,
Thanks for your work!
