The Department of Medicine (DOM) is creating a taskforce charged with developing the internal medicine component of a new program called outPatient Integrated lONgitudinal ExpERience, or PIONEER, for second-year medical students.

The goal of PIONEER is to increase their experience with the outpatient practice of general internal medicine and its subspecialties, as well as increase opportunities for faculty to teach medical students in the clinic setting.

With an anticipated start date of August 2023, PIONEER will give second year students a multidisciplinary outpatient experience lasting 16 weeks while their inpatient medicine clerkship will decrease from eight to six weeks.

For IM specifically, PIONEER offers the chance for students to have more outpatient IM experience as the core clerkship will become not just an inpatient experience but also offer this new outpatient experience, which reflects the practice of medicine for most faculty.

The taskforce is anticipated to work together for 12 months, starting in April 2022. Taskforce faculty will meet monthly (virtually or in person), project the capacity of their divisions to provide outpatient clinical education to second year medical students, report regularly to Division Chiefs about PIONEER planning, act as an educational leader in their division and provide faculty education about PIONEER plans to their division, and contribute to plans to evaluate students and assess the efficacy of PIONEER.

Federal Regulations do not allow California State University, East Bay to provide East Bay students with funding in excess of their Cost of Attendance or 'Need' as calculated by the FAFSA/ CADAA Application. ( Need = COA - EFC).

Write an essay titled My Story: that tells us about you. Be Specific about your academic and career goals, and how you plan to reach those goals. Discuss any obstacles you have overcome and any specific financial needs you have. This is your opportunity to share with us what makes you unique and deserving of a scholarship.

Obstacles can be anything from your financial situation, to being the first in your family to go to college, to not having your own mode of transportation. You just have to show why that obstacle is important and why a scholarship will help you overcome this and other obstacles.

However, the CSUEB Financial Aid & Scholarship Office sometimes have opportunities available and posted on the ScholarshipUniverse portal and encourage students to check frequently from our scholarship database.

Q: If I do receive financial aid and a scholarship, will my financial aid be affected?Scholarships are accounted for in your financial aid package, as they are considered an educational resource.

Q: Will my other financial aid be reduced if I win a scholarship?

While this is possible, it is unlikely. When this does occur, it is typically only when Loans are taken out, up to the Cost of Attendance (COA) budget. In that case, the loans are reduced and replaced by the scholarship: we are swapping free money for money that would have had to be repaid.

Q: Am I eligible for scholarship opportunities if I have not been admitted to CSUEB yet?

You may apply for scholarship opportunities; however, your application will only be considered if you are admitted, and you meet scholarship eligibility requirements. Your scholarship application does not guarantee admission to CSUEB.

Q: When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship?

Scholarship opportunities are offered by many departments and colleges across campus with different deadlines dates; therefore, we suggest that you occasionally log in and check for updates. If selected for a scholarship, the department will contact you directly.

The PTC Student Matinee Program is designed to expose your students grades 6 to 12 to live professional theatre so they can develop an understanding of and love for this great art form. Wednesday matinees are held for all shows of the season and are open to grade school, junior high, and high school groups only. These performances are exactly the same as the evening performances, and feature the same quality professional theatre.

Student Matinees begin at 2 p.m. and are always held on Wednesdays. Ending times vary for each show. Tickets range from $2 to $16. We can occasionally provide assistance with ticket prices or transportation.

Class Credit

Students at Catawba College manage and maintain the student newspaper under the direction of a faculty advisor through the Communication Department with one credit hour for Applied Journalism available multiple semesters. Opportunities include:

In some cases, students receive additional credit hours for serving in roles requiring more time and advanced skills. Typically, additional hours are credited as practica hours and are reserved for juniors and seniors maintaining solid GPAs.

The 1926 pilot issue was reviewed by students in the fall of 2009 as the campus newspaper shifted from a print to an online format. It was an interesting time for students to trace the roots of the paper, still as relevant today as it was nearly 100 years ago.

The Pioneer Journey helps our students connect the dots across their whole SHU experience. The Pioneer Journey calls for diverse encounters and challenging conversations, celebrating new ideas and big achievements, and serving others while nourishing an open mind.

You will find five pillars supporting every aspect of the SHU student experience: in class, on the field, around the Chapel quad, on the stage, studying abroad at SHU in Dingle, at 63's, learning through a group project, in the residence halls and everywhere Pioneers go on this journey together.

Intentional reflection integrates everything that we do. The Pioneer Journey shows how the big questions raised by the liberal arts impact the decisions made on the playing field, about life and love, and on the job. Becoming a Pioneer means engaging your heart: really showing up and bringing your insights from intentional reflection every step of the way.

The Pioneer Journey Advisory Committee is a group of faculty and staff from across the University excited to support the Pioneer Journey and develop new initiatives and programs. If you are a member of the SHU community and interested in joining, contact gille...@sacredheart.edu.
