Hi,
GSoC has just opened for applications from mentoring organizations. This calls for doubling our efforts as the application deadline is March 9th and I hope we won't run into the student syndrome ;).

Hi All,
I have started the ideas page and also put down some responses to the application questionnaire. Please help flesh out the details for submission.

The ideas page especially can use some more ideas and people signing up to mentor some of the existing ones.

Kojo

We should definitely have a project for automated testing and

I am glad there's a good amount of interest in this. Regarding getting
our dev process in order, that's one of the pros of participating: To
force a solution to that problem, quickly (a quote from The Art of War
would be apt but is not forthcoming :-) ) . It's hard to find the
right size of projects so I suggest we do the following; combine
smaller tasks to form a project and also stage big projects so that
the first part fits a 3 month schedule. There are some more tips here
<http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/making-your-ideas-page/>.

Here are some project ideas;
 * Spike Weka <http://weka.pentaho.com/> for mining data warehouse for
insights
 * Create a Message Program Quality Assurance Tool - including
http://pmo.applab.org/browse/MOGH-810
 * Client feedback and sentiment analysis tool
 * Improve Motech's Saiku Analysis
<http://www.motechghana.org/data/analysis/> with more cubes and
calculated measures and data quality checking
 * Cross-platform mobile app for nurses

The following manual is a good read - GSoC Mentoring

I'm always up for mentoring. What concerns me more is carving out an
achievable 3 month project and getting our dev process in order. :)

Does anyone have suggestions for features that they think would fit
well in the program. If so shoot them off to me and I'll start an
ideas board and post it.

Hi guys,

Wanted to bring this to the top of the email pile and get your
thoughts sounds like providing them with a few well defined tasks
could help us build features into the platform and start to build a
community (albeit small) around the platform. Commitment wise, we
would have to provide mentoring and periodic evaluations - does not
seem too taxing.

Thanks.

David.

Hi All,
I am convinced that we should make a good attempt to participate in
this year's Google Summer of Code
<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2012> (GSoC).
The GSoC is an intern program that connects students to open source
projects with Google paying the student a stipend for a period of 3
months.

It is very well structured to ensure that the open source project
gets real contribution from the accepted students. Applying to the
programme will yield the following benefits;

1. Ensure that we are truly open source and get the benefits of the
external developer community - This is a major reason why Mifos is
still alive today. The project built a community of developers around
it including a former GSoC intern, Udai Gupta.

2. Clean up our development processes - As new developers join a
project, the core developers are forced to clarify how things work
and how things should be done. We can take advantage of this dynamic
to document the systems properly.

3. Get more work done - There's a lot of features and improvements to
be made to the system. Having hard working interns take on some of
this can only be good.

4. Simply a great experience - GSoC interns will mostly be remote. I
don't know about you but I find collaborating with people around the
world exciting.

On the responsibility side, we need to have a liaison (called
Organization Administrator) and mentors to participate. We also need
an ideas page which will list the various challenges we will hope to
see interns take on. More on applying here
<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2012/faqs#mentoring_apply>.

I participated in the program in 2010 and worked on Mifos as some of
you might already know.

Regards,
Kojo

Hi,
I'm judging that there not a lot of passion around this programme so I would like to withdraw the proposal. More so because if we make a poor showing now, it would jeopardize future opportunities for the programme (at which point we might be better prepared).
