Paul McCartney first teased the song's release this June on BBC Radio 4. The record has a long history, which includes a demo recorded by Lennon in the late '70s in his residence at The Dakota in New York.

"It was important to me that the changes we made were authentic ... Paul said, you know, we need to follow George's rhythm. It was really interesting how he worked. It was like, we need to concentrate on The Beatles and what they're doing, like they're in the room," Martin said. "That was the magic of it. It comes from heart and from the right place and [Paul's] desire to collaborate with John, even though he can't. And even the song itself is almost John's love letter to Paul in a way: 'Now and then, I miss you.' That's how it felt. It felt incredibly special doing it."

The new single closes out a trio of songs that the Beatles released after their last album, Let It Be, which came out in 1970. All three are based on demos that Lennon recorded with a boombox and piano at his Upper West Side home in New York City, before he was murdered just outside of it on December 8, 1980.

But in 2021, Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings film series, released the documentary series The Beatles: Get Back, about the rock band, which relied on artificial intelligence to isolate sound from old videos. The film is made largely from footage recorded while the Beatles were working on Let It Be in 1969. The audio had primarily been recorded with a single mono microphone, making it impossible for listeners to pick out the voices of the band members over the sounds of amplifiers, drums and other noises, Jackson explained in an interview with Collider last year.

In the initial scenes, we learn that Steve (Greg Kinnear) is creating a new stained-glass window to replace the one lost in a fire at the nearby church. In the end, during Ronnie's father's funeral, she announces that no words can do justice to how amazing he was. Instead, she decides to express her feelings by playing their song. As she starts playing, the stained-glass window lets in sunlight, and she can't help but smile, feeling her father's presence with her.

To a visitor from North America, where bird hunting is well regulated and only naughty farm boys shoot songbirds, the situation in the Mediterranean is appalling: Every year, from one end of it to the other, hundreds of millions of songbirds and larger migrants are killed for food, profit, sport, and general amusement. The killing is substantially indiscriminate, with heavy impact on species already battered by destruction or fragmentation of their breeding habitat. Mediterraneans shoot cranes, storks, and large raptors for which governments to the north have multimillion-euro conservation projects. All across Europe bird populations are in steep decline, and the slaughter in the Mediterranean is one of the causes.

"Now And Then" comes from the same batch of unreleased demos written by the late John Lennon, which were taken by his former bandmates to construct the songs "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love," released in the mid-1990s.

With the help of artificial intelligence, director Peter Jackson cleared those problems up by "separating" Lennon's original vocals from a piano used in the late 1970s. The much clearer vocals allowed McCartney and Starr to complete the track last year.

"There it was, John's voice, crystal clear," McCartney said in the announcement. "It's quite emotional. And we all play on it, it's a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven't heard, I think it's quite an exciting thing."

Harrison's widow, Olivia, said he felt in the 1990s that the technical problems made it impossible to release a song that met the band's standards. With the improvements, "he would have wholeheartedly" joined Paul and Ringo in completing the song now if he were still alive, she said.

The Beatles have released the last song they recorded. The song is titled "Now and Then". It was written by John Lennon in 1977. He sang it at the piano and recorded it in 1979 at his home. The other Beatles added to the track over the years. Recording engineers used AI technology to bring the song to life, resulting in a sound like the four Beatles recorded it together in a studio. The song has been released as a double-A side single. The flip side of the record is a new mix of the band's first single "Love Me Do". This was first released in 1962. "Now and Then" will also be the final track on a new edition of the Beatles' legendary greatest hits "blue" album. This is a collection of their classics from 1967-1970.

Beatles member Paul McCartney spoke to reporters about the new song. He said: "It's quite emotional. And we all play on it. It's a genuine Beatles recording." He spoke about his excitement at being able to release a new song, saying: "In 2023, to still be working on Beatles music, and to release a new song the public haven't heard, I think it's an exciting thing." McCartney was also excited about hearing John Lennon's voice. He said it was "crystal clear". Lennon was shot dead by a fan outside his New York home in 1980. Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said recording the song was, "the closest we'll ever come to having [John Lennon] back in the room". He said it was, "very emotional for all of us".
