Hi Michelle
Just thought it might be easier to put the info on and email as there's quite alot! I'm just giving you these tips so you enjoy your walks and don't feel stressed with the two. You will probably find your own way and get to know them in your own time.
They are generally well behaved as you saw on the walk, they are used to Werneth and there are no roads or cats to chase! It's nice and safe so if you want to go there that would be a nice walk.
If you take them in the car, keep their leads on because you will need to grab them as they get out. If Coco spots a cat or bird she will be off! I usually take them out of the side of the car so I can stand in front of them blocking their exit. Just gives me better control.
On the normal leads they will pull and it's not enjoyable for you, I usually use harnesses and I can bring one round when I drop the key and show you how it works, bit tricky to start but worth it! I always wrap the lead round my wrist a couple of times aswell, again if they see cats they pull.
I usually do the "treat distraction" just like you did with the horses, and move on quickly. I wish a cat would box them round the nose so they don't feel so brave but I wouldn't let them near enough to try, they would rip it to pieces. They act as a pack and wind each other up sometimes but if you have Coco under control, Oli will follow. I always get Coco on the lead first.
If you take them out the house to put them in your car, I do one at a time, Coco first. She doesn't pull as much and get excited. Shut the car and then get Oli.
Coco always walks on the right, Oli on the left. They walk nicely like this.
I will leave towels, treats, poo bags etc in the white cabinet by the front door. Leads and harnesses are in here aswell.
It might be an idea to take them for a good walk on the leads, go through the Tame Valley (I'll leave directions) and just explore. If you are in a large field with no obvious exits, roads etc they can have a good run off the lead. They will always come to you if you have treats. Give them treats every so often, recall training and they will soon get used to you.
As you go out of my house, go to the bottom of the road. Cross over and turn right. At the first road (Broomfields?) walk down this road. There is then a fork to the right, walk down here and you come to a patch of grass. (There is a cat to the left here and they always look out for it) if its there don't let them off the leads until you are on the other side of the field. They will run back. Across the patch of grass you will see a gateway to the fields.
Turn left and you can walk through a wooded area up to cemetry park, fork right and you get to Shepway (on lead)
Go straight across the field and you come to steps leading round by the canal, I wouldn't let them go in, they cut themselves on the litter and it stinks!
Turn right and the path leads round fields and through the valley, lots of horses fields so I would keep them on lead, Coco loves manure! This comes to a football field where you can let them off. Keep going under a motorway bridge and cross the road, you can go for miles up through haughton green etc.
like I say may be good to just walk on lead until you get used to the areas.
Lyme Park is great, there are lovely walks through the woods and up on the hills. Anyone will guide you here. Sheep arn't around this time of year so its lovely. The dogs are great if you want to sit and have a coffee in the cafe outside. I think its every 3rd weekend they let dogs in the house gardens aswell.
Brabyns park is nice, but don't let them in the water, really strong currents and a couple of dogs have drowned here.
I sometime go to St Annes if you fancy a day on the beach? They love it there, miles of sand, loads of dog walkers and plenty of cafes to sit outside.
I will leave you to explore!
I'll drop a key round on Wednesday unless you want to come here and see where everything is? I'll be up till 11 if it's not too later after your work? Address is below.
Thanks very much for this, I love walks with them, I hope you do too!
