Richard Misrach & Guillermo Galindo at Pace Gallery
Written by Madeleine Leddy

"It would be a mistake to go to Pace’s current exhibit, Border Cantos, at their 25th Street location, a collaboration between American photographer Richard Misrach and Mexican-born sound artist Guillermo Galindo, with the intention of spending only a short time at the gallery."

Fons Iannelli at Steven Kasher Gallery
Written by Kathryn Kearney

"People like to give nicknames, but nicknames that stick forever are hard to come by. Alfonso “Fons” Iannelli, a native of Park Ridge, Illinois, began his work in photography at his father’s sculpture studio. He received the nickname of “Fons” from one of his father’s friends who worked in the graphic arts industry."

Chad Moore at Agnes B. Galerie

Ezra Stoller at Yossi Milo
Written by Kathryn Kearney

"In celebration of architect, Frank Lloyd Wright’s 150th birthday, the Yossi Milo Gallery is displaying Ezra Stoller’s photographs of Wright’s buildings. Myoung Ho Lee at Yossi Milo
Written by Kathryn Kearney

"Myoung Ho Lee focuses on trees in their natural state and prompts viewers to observe details they might not have otherwise seen. This set of images was shot in Korea and Mongolia over the course of six years from 2011 to 2017. Myoung Ho Lee’s Tree… is a remarkable series of photographs with trees as the central focus, in an artistic and naturalistic state."

Book Review:
The Narcissistic City
By Emily Davis

"The process of photographing with a camera obscura requires exposure from a singular light source, perhaps a metaphorical spotlight on the buildings he was capturing. Narrowing the scope and giving the buildings undivided attention, Homma magnifies their ability to be self-absorbed."

Visual Notes of an Upside-Down World at P.P.O.W
By Katie Heiserman

"Visual Notes of an Upside-Down World has a clear and dauntless agenda. It is designed to disturb, to distill and represent today’s unsettling political realities. The mirror panel embedded in Hugh Hayden’s carved wooden sculpture, one of about two dozen works in the show, could rightfully serve as a metaphor for what the show as a whole works to achieve - holding a mirror up to what’s corrupt, backwards (or upside-down) in the world we live in.

By Isabella Weiss

Dirk Braekman's Belgium Pavilion at the Venice Biennale
By Madeleine Leddy

"If pictures could talk, Dirk Braeckman would want his to say very little.  Unfortunately for Braeckman, reality is difficult for most audiences to completely de-contextualize (and perhaps this is just the kind of intellectual gymnastics that he hopes his audience will attempt), and even the monochrome, unassuming film prints he has prepared for the minimalistic Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale are bound to say something to the curious viewer.

Interview By Andrea Blanch

"You've got to be shameless, and by that I don't mean in terms of promoting yourself. You've got to be shameless about the way in which you make art. You can't make art with the idea that people might not like it, that it might be viewed as one thing or another."

"Trophy bottoms, toy busses, gift store seashells, paint buckets, plastic flamingo heads, and bed frames: these are a number of the identifiable things in Willa Nasatir’s experimental photographic works currently exhibited at the Whitney. These images embody the meaning of the previously emphasized term, the designation things. "

D'Angelo Lovell Williams
By Isabella Weiss

"The conclusory consensus on this exhibition is that it was truly successful: many critics agree that Williams has reinvigorated nude photography, a field previously considered to have stagnated in its conceptual capacity. Williams has done this by ridding the self-portrait of both stereotypes and egotism. He poses sensually and yet the images are without a sense of vanity. He is seductive without ascribing to euro-centrist or heterosexual conventions of beauty."

Eternal Friendship by Anouck Durand
By Isabella Weiss

"Between 1961 and 1971 Albanian photographers were sent to China to be trained in a color photography technique in which the layering of a green, a red, and a blue image generated an illusionistic color spectrum. These photographers were already familiar with Kodak color printing, and yet the Albanian government deemed this technique a Western, capitalist indulgence..."

Interview by Anthony Huang

"Charlie Rubin’s work is an exploration of the ordinary, with a twist, dissolving the line between artificial and real.
He diligently captures intimate details of cultural cues by way of landscape, still life, portraiture, and various multimedia techniques. At its core, Rubin presents a visualization of a change in culture. Using intuition as a guide; photography, painting, sculpture and collage collide creating a kaleidoscope vision."

Kumi Oguro
Interview by Jing Zhao

"Using female models, I create a world just next to our reality. The images might look like they tell a story, but there is no narrative, no logic. In that way, they are close to our dreams, or at least mine. The combination of opposed elements, such as the fragile and the destructive, the eerie and the absurd, the tragic and the playful, is a very important part of my creation."

Exhibition Review:
Sandro Miller's
My Hair. My Soul, My Freedom
at Chicago Expo

"Sandro Miller’s exhibition My Hair, My Soul, My Freedom shows hairstyles being worn by Black women today and will be premiering at the Chicago Art Expo on Thursday, September 14th. Each hairstyle presented is based on the specific model’s personal “hair story” and is modeled after something she would wear on the street. The uniform black tone painted on the models’ skin serves as an equalizer that removes any potential prejudicial biases."

Exhibition Review:
Eva O'Leary at Meyohas
By Isabella Weiss

"The image of an identity split between original and display is again represented in O’leary’s portrait of a young woman. Her face is half made-up and the line between natural and belied skin tones is visible. Because she exposes her decorated half to the camera, the eye without makeup is itself denigrated in shadow. It is her unmasked side that is truly hidden from the public eye.

 By Katherine Bourgeois

"Young Ukrainian Sasha Kurmaz began his artistic practice tagging the walls of Kiev in the early aughts, where urban vandalism and a zest for playful semiotics seamlessly lead him to conceptual photography. Rebel in the Rye (2017)
By Belle McIntyre

"This biopic about J.D. Salinger is the closest we will ever get to a film version of his iconic and most famous work The Catcher in the Rye. It was his most ambitious and arduous to produce and ironically it’s overwhelming success turned out to be a double-edged sword."

Interview by Jing Zhao

"I chose to work in this format because of how dynamic and flexible it is. The book offers an opportunity to expose the viewer to the body of work rather than single image, maintaining my control over the order in which the images are seen. Organising, sequencing and creating relationships between paired images reflects the process of shooting in the street; finding elements of everyday urban views and cropping them into photographs."

Daido Moriyama

"Moriyama began his work as a photographer shooting scenes in his native Shinjyuku region of Tokyo, a region that he loves and where he refined his point and shoot, voyeuristic street photography into a school of his own. Bure (shake) Boke (no focus) style has been widely imitated and widely criticized. Bure Boke was Moriyama’s way of going against the accepted style, the entire reason for its existence was in opposition to the normal way of doing things. The results of this were so interesting that the opposition became his independent expression.  "

It seemed strange that we exist in this very private interior almost living room while circulating in such a public way. I began to read a lot of Pierre Bourdieu and Paul Virillio to try to better understand how society had come to be shaped as it is."

I just figure people would be attracted to it like how people are attracted to things that sparkle and shine. When I realized that the Deutsche Bank fire became quite serious, I still didn’t think it was very relevant. An Incomplete History of Protest at the Whitney
by Issabella Weiss

"The Whitney’s current and ongoing
exhibition is titled with care “An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940-2017.” This history is labeled incomplete because the curators do not want to give the impression that they believe the history of artistic protest represented in this exhibition is all-encompassing, but also because this history is still ongoing, still alive and well within the institution itself. "I have learned that running away from my own personal dialogue or story lead to disingenuous dialogue with myself and the world. I was very concerned about what was outside of me. I struggled with many shades of shame and self worth. It was important for me to discover my own internal voice and filter of seeing the world. If we follow our history, passions, and/or interest it leads us to our authentic, one of kind voice and expression. "

It was not until his arrival to the United States in 2014 that he finally had the courage to reveal his homosexuality. Guanyu's exposure to American culture as a teenager through films and TV shows planted an American Dream in his mind. However, he came to realize that this perception was not entirely accurate."

" When I got into working in 3D, my original approach was to realize that this 3D world was something analogous to our own world – it was this new, undiscovered territory that you’re creating while exploring it. All of this frontier imagery started to come into the earlier work, which was a lot about conquering a frontier in American history, but very much in light of where we’ve ended up and how we’ve conquered it. "

Faces Places (2017)

" At the risk of sounding too gushy and hyperbolic, I have to say, this film is a gift and a delight to have and to hold. It is the irresistible love child of two thoroughly fascinating, wildly creative artists from such unlikely backgrounds it defies logic on the surface. The iconic Agnes Varda at age 89 is one of France’s most revered and prolific filmmakers, who works in a documentary/realistic style with a focus on social and feminist issues."

Fruits of Surveillance: Xu Bing Interview about "Dragonfly Eyes"
by Anthony Huang

"In the beginning, almost everybody, especially filmmakers, told me the idea really wouldn’t work. Because you need to have some fundamental elements to support a narrative film, such as characters, certain circumstances and situations, the developments of the storylines, etc. But the materials of surveillance camera, and my ways of montage, obviously would violate these fundamental rules. "

"The moment you want to become a political leader, you become a certain kind of person. It’s hypocritical, because power is ruthless; it’s cynical. So it’s kind of hard for me to find, even in the most utopian and idealistic leader, one that doesn’t have to deal with horrible decision making. Because in the end, a political leader, from my understanding, is protecting the interest of just one group of people, a nation."

"I always felt women needed to claim their right to equality not by being more like men, but by being fully themselves. The feminine qualities of being have been undermined for so long. It is time for them to assume pride of place for the attributes that are theirs rather than trying to match up and conform to some masculine standard. "

Film Review:
The Florida Project (2017)
by Belle McIntyre

"This one, filmed in 35 mm., is set in a would-be utopian planned community to service Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Imagine a low-rent Las Vegas for kids. And then imagine a lavender motel called The Magic Kingdom which costs $38 a night and has the motliest crew of misfits, miscreants, and folks just trying to get by. It resembles a housing project, with welfare recipients receiving food deliveries daily."

"I sort of been grappling with the thing. When there were major floods in New York and England last year, I went up as an experiment to work digitally and the portraits were just not as strong even though they were technically efficient.  On one level, there’s the theatre of operating with film and the Rolleiflex camera. While an old camera, it slows it down and makes it more difficult, it adds a little more to the theatre in terms of engaging with your subject. "

Eeva Hannula
Interview by Jing Zhao

"I have been working on The Structure of Uncertainty since 2011. Back then I felt that all my photographs were too controlled and mute, and that I couldn't express myself enough with only photography. I started to look for my own imagery and discovered a way to combine surprising visual elements with each other."

"Mexico’s tight-knit community of family-owned circuses, whose big tops seem like a midcentury relic compared with the glittering spectacle that most Americans know, is on the defensive, arguing that a cherished Mexican tradition would vanish and tens of thousands of people, many of them the working poor, would be thrown out of work."

"My real start when was when my party photos caught Anna Wintour’s attention in 1997. She offered me a contract on the spot. I spent the following years on the jet-set party circuit capturing snaps of socialites and celebrities for Vogue.  The job offered me a rare opportunity to create an anthropological study of high society at its most uninhibited. "

Film Review:
Loving Vincent (2017)
by Belle McIntyre

"The remarkable achievement of this film is that it seems as if it is the embodiment of being inside Van Gogh’s brain. Not a comfortable place to be. More like an acid trip on steroids.
The animators have managed to reproduce not just the look, but the act of painting the iconic images which are so familiar to all of us."
