Hotshoe X FlakPhoto - Why Print Matters

"The inside of a library still feels like hope, a whiff of vanilla whispering to me that anything is possible. The choice of a bookmark. Each thing its own satisfaction."

We are very happy to share with you a collaboration with Andy Adams of FlakPhoto on the importance of print and why it matters.

If you're not already familiar, FlakPhoto is a curated newsletter for photography lovers on Substack. More than just a newsletter, it is an inclusive community of people who Andy engages with to create content and ideas. It highlights established and up and coming photographers alike, and poses thought provoking questions for the readers to delve into. We've been big fans of Andy and subscribers of FlakPhoto for some time now. He manages to hit all the right notes with his extensive knowledge of photography, his humor and his good-natured mid-western likeability.

You can learn more about FlakPhoto and subscribe to his newsletter here, and you can follow along on instagram here.

In this week's newsletter, our editor-in-chief Melissa DeWitt has written a piece on the beauty of books and the emotions they evoke, the inspiration behind Hotshoe and why we do what we do, and the importance of print in our screen- dominant digital world.

"The physicality of a printed object also invites intimacy and connection. I feel that there is a community of readers who recognize the words and the work in the pages of Hotshoe. Digital media is excellent for mass information gathering. Still, print slows us down and allows us to concentrate without distractions, inviting us to experience what is being showcased with more of our senses."

FlakPhoto is doing a giveaway of Hotshoe's issue on Todd Hido, click below to continue reading and comment on the article to register your interest!
