London

Hotshoe is excited to return to Photo London at Olympia London in Kensington, taking place this week from May 14th to the 17th. We will be at the Publisher Table section so please stop by if you plan on attending.

London is our stomping ground, so we thought we would include some of our favourite places to eat and drink and, of course, shop for photography books if you plan on visiting. We hope you enjoy, and we hope to see you at Photo London!

Some booths at Photo London we are looking forward to!

Victoria Law Projects - The Living TraceBooth J13

Victoria Law Projects, an independent project space based in London and dedicated to showcasing voices in contemporary art through exhibitions, talks, and cross-cultural collaborations, will present The Living Trace in the Discovery Section of this year's Photo London. The booth brings together work by British artist Edward Rollitt and Argentine visual artist Carolina Baldomá.

As Victoria Law Projects notes,  "(t)hough operating in entirely different registers, Rollitt constructing psychologically charged interiors in rural Hampshire and Baldomá making cyanotypes in elemental collaboration with the Argentine Pampas, both practices are animated by the same understanding: that matter carries memory, and that what a photograph records is not just what was in front of the camera, but what passed between the maker and their materials."

Edward Rollit has also recently been nominated for the Nikon Emerging Photographer Award this year, and the winner will be announced at the fair.

Fisheye Gallery - Delphine Diallo - Booth B01

Based in Paris and Arles, Fisheye Gallery was founded in 2015 by Benoit Baume. It is the extension of the successful Fisheye Magazine, a magazine that highlights established and up and coming photographers, with each issue exploring a different theme.

This year at Photo London the gallery is representing photographer Delphine Diallo, a French-Senegalese artist who first expressed herself via the mediums of graphic design, music and art direction. Diallo’s work focuses on the female body and shifting the male gaze. It invites viewers to see the world through her eyes, and to engage with the rich layers of stories and ancestral wisdom that demand to be told.

Galerie Peter Sillem - Ute and Werner MahlerBooth F02

Galerie Peter Sillem is a Frankfurt based gallery focusing on contemporary fine art photography, exhibiting both established and emerging photographers. The gallery represents 15 artists, and also performs an advisory role for private and corporate photography collectors. This year they are exhibiting a series of black and white portraits by German photographic duo Ute and Werner Mahler, a documentary style series of young women in different cities. They are one of the most important figures in German photography, and together they have co-founded the photography agency Ostkreuz, as well as Ostkreuz School in Berlin.

Idea Bookshop

Founded by Angela Hill and David Owen, IDEA is one of London’s most influential independent bookshops, renowned for its tightly curated selection of rare, out-of-print, and contemporary books spanning photography, fashion, art and culture. We love stopping by to browse the shop, located on the 2nd floor of a building on the corner of Wardour St, when we are in Soho; what we don't love is how much poorer we are when we leave!

BITE TO EAT… or drink near Photo London?

Canteen - Golborne road

Located on Golborne road, Canteen is a fairly new but high up on the West London food scene restaurant with fast service, friendly staff and delicious pasta. They don’t take reservations and are on a first come first serve basis, but not to worry - put your name in the queue and head across the street to the Golborne Deli for a glass of wine while you wait.

@canteen.310

Next Door Records - Shepherd’s Bush

Located within a 15 minute walk from Olympia, this record store is also a bar that serves all sorts of natural wines and cocktails if you’re in the mood! Oh and the music is pretty good too ;)

@nextdoorrecords

The Cow - Notting Hill

Located in the heart of Notting Hill, The Cow is an institution. It’s a pub that’s been around for years and you’ll find the true locals there. Most importantly, it is widely recognised for its culinary achievements and makes for a great dinner or lunch spot. Make sure you go there early especially on a weekend, as if we haven’t already made it obvious, it’s a popular spot!
