The New Museum’s 60,000 sq ft building expansion designed by OMA / Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with Executive Architect Cooper Robertson (now Corgan) will open to the public on March 21, 2026.
Blending seamlessly with the existing SANAA-designed flagship building on the Bowery at Prince Street, the expanded footprint provides twice the gallery space for visitors to experience the institution’s exhibitions; fluid circulation through the addition of three elevators, an Atrium Stair, and an entrance plaza; and new venues for public programs and special events, including an enlarged seventh floor Sky Room and a new 74-seat Forum. On its upper floors, the expanded building will feature a dedicated studio for artists-in-residence and a purpose-built home for the Museum’s cultural incubator NEW INC. On the ground level, visitors will be welcomed into an enlarged lobby, an expanded bookstore, and a full-service restaurant operated by the Oberon Group. The expanded New Museum will be one of the only examples in the world of the combined work of two living Pritzker Prize-winning architects. |

Spanning the entirety of the expanded New Museum, the inaugural exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future traces a diagonal history of the past one hundred years through the work of more than two hundred international artists, writers, scientists, architects, and filmmakers, highlighting key moments when dramatic technological and societal changes spurred new conceptions of humanity and new visions for its possible futures. Continuing the New Museum’s long history of presenting provocative and timely group exhibitions, New Humans explores artists’ enduring preoccupation with what it means to be human in the face of sweeping technological changes. |

Plaza: Sarah Lucas—VENUS VICTORIA
Opening March 21, 2026
VENUS VICTORIA by Sarah Lucas is the inaugural commission for the new outdoor plaza on Bowery at Prince Street created as part of the New Museum’s OMA-designed building expansion. Selected by an all-artist jury comprised of Teresita Fernández, Joan Jonas, Julie Mehretu, Cindy Sherman, and Kiki Smith, Lucas is the first of five recipients over ten years of a biennial award supporting the production of new sculpture by women artists. |

Facade: Tschabalala Self—Art Lovers
Opening March 21, 2026
As part of the New Museum’s ongoing Facade Sculpture Program, Tschabalala Self presents a new site-specific work depicting a romantic scene of a couple embracing, mirroring the architectural “kiss point” where the SANAA-designed building meets the OMA-designed expansion. Visible from Bowery and Prince Street, Art Lovers offers viewers a contemporary portrait of NYC life and the personal connections enabled by public spaces like museums. |

Atrium Stair: Klára Hosnedlová
Opening March 21, 2026
The site-specific installation by Klára Hosnedlová commissioned for the Museum’s new Atrium Stair is the artist’s first museum project in the United States. Drawing on Eastern Bloc architecture, science fiction aesthetics, and centuries-old craft techniques, Hosnedlová’s commission winds through the Atrium Stair from the Museum’s Lobby to the Fourth Floor. |
