The mood is: sharing too many words from your favorite disruptive publishing house of and for the XXIst century

A glimpse of the future, rooted in the conversations of today.

The past weeks have carried JBE Books across borders and through encounters: from the crowded halls of the New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 to a lively signing at Le Bon Marché in Paris. Along the way, we’ve shared our latest books, brought together artists and readers, and added new chapters to our editorial journey.

In this talkative newsletter, we look back at these moments and open a window onto what’s coming: projects that reimagine archives, question digital culture, revisit cinema through words, and expand the voices of contemporary artists and craftsmen.

JBE Books at the New York Art Book Fair

Once again, JBE travelled across the Atlantic and took part of Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair. This year we came with old classics as well as our latest titles:

ARTISTS BOOKS FOR THE WIDEST AUDIENCE — Creative interventions
Couldn’t Care Less by Thomas Lélu and Lee Shulman invites readers to remix found photographs with provocative text stickers.
No Ads Please by Rémi Babinet, founder of BETC, reflects on image culture through 950 visuals and short essays.

THE DIGITAL OCEAN — Perspectives on the contemporary world

The Ocean Manifesto gathers voices to explore the ocean as a shared global responsibility.
The World Through AI brings together artists and thinkers such as Nick Montfort and Hito Steyerl to interrogate the cultural impact of generative artificial intelligence.

ARTISTS VOICES — Artist-led monographs

Elsa Sahal explores feminist sculpture in ceramics.
Edi Dubien reveals the artist’s profound engagement with nature.
Raphaël Barontini examines post-colonialism, questioning the representation of power and heroism.

Thank you Printed Matter, MoMA PS1, our readers, artists, authors, friends, and our distributor Artbook D.A.P. for an unforgettable fair 💫

Book signing at Le Bon Marché
with Thomas Lélu and Lee Shulman

On the occasion of its “Rock’n Drôle” exhibition, Le Bon Marché in Paris hosted a book signing of Couldn’t Care Less with artists and authors Thomas Lélu and Lee Shulman.

Part photobook, part activity book, Couldn't Care Less represents a team-up between Anonymous Project founder Lee Shulman and Instagram darling Thomas Lélu.
Unveiling a previously unpublished archive of over 90 found photographs from the Anonymous Project, each page includes a blank space to add a selection from the more than 120 aphorisms and short phrases by Lélu (perhaps "Now is a good time" or "No inspiration today sorry"), handwritten and printed onto sticker sheets bound into the back of the book. Readers are free to combine text and image as they see fit—it's clear that the authors Couldn't Care Less.

Can we imagine a retrospective of a filmmaker without screening his films?
Yes, if description replaces screening.

Michael Snow's filmography (1928–2023) lends itself to this game of translation better than any other. In 1978, Daniel Caux proposed to the Canadian artist a polyphonic exhibition carried by the voices of Michael Snow, Chantal Ackerman, Dominique Noguez, Hervé Delilia, Claudine Eizykman, and Guy Fihman.

The meme, that fleeting and versatile element of digital culture, is now much more than just a tool for instant humor.

They represent a complex visual and conceptual language, oscillating between absurdity, social criticism, and pure art. MEMAGANDA captures this elusive essence and translates it into an editorial format that combines aesthetics, mystery, and reflection.
MEMAGANDA is an attempt to crystallize the ephemeral beauty of memes into a tangible object. The selected memes are not just funny: they disturb, intrigue, and captivate with their aesthetics as much as with their sometimes obscure references. They explore a variety of themes, from the absurd to nostalgia, from esotericism to social criticism.

Blending absurdity, trauma, and humor, Songs for the Unwanted is a richly layered monograph on Austrian artist Gernot Wieland. Known for his voiceover-driven films that merge drawing, claymation, and philosophical narration, Wieland builds a world where autobiography, fiction, and psychoanalysis converge.

The book spans over a decade of work, featuring stills and scripts from films such as Ink in Milk and Thievery and Songs, alongside installations, texts, and diaristic drawings. Marie Darrieussecq contributes a haunting literary reflection that mirrors Wieland’s exploration of memory, repression, and emotional dissonance.

A Banquet of Nature is an invitation to cook up the world, art, and ideas in the company of six voices of contemporary creation gathered around chef Pierre Gagnaire. Like a conversation at a banquet table, our guests share their inspirations on nature, the companionship between species, and the major cultural phenomenon that is cooking.

Pierre Gagnaire's recipes, which punctuate this book, can accompany any meal or banquet, elevating it to the sublime. The whole book is to be savored at your own pace, according to your desires and mood, as if you were a guest at this table, nibbling on art and ideas, and cooking up the world.

I wanted to offer recipes to make every meal, every banquet, a memorable moment. In addition to the dishes you cook, each of the condiments presented here invites nature to the table.
– Pierre Gagnaire
