Hi All,
not being able to make the ride over last year's route I'm running on what I recall was suggested then and discussed since. Planned breaks for the day would be:
  • Moss Vale for riders from Wollongong - 5 - 10 minutes depending on arrival time
  • Wingello - no more than 10 minutes
  • Marulan -  morning tea break 30 minutes
  • Tarago - Lunch - 1 hour
  • Bungerdore - Afternoon tea 30 - 40 minutes
  • Smith's climb - 5- 10 minutes to regroup and refuel for the final leg.
I seem to recall advance warning was given to a couple of places that our group was coming through. Is this necessary this year.
Will we be stopping at the same cafes for the morning/arvo tea and lunch?
Thoughts?

That sounds good from memory, a couple of the learnings from last year as I recall was each rider should check the condition of their bike when entering the rest stop not after.   I think we had a longer break at marulan due to a flat picked up at the end of morning tea which might have been worked on during the break saving us some time.  But sometimes these things don’t show up immediately.

 

This one is a sensitive suggestion: Perhaps I might make a call if I see someone really struggling from the car (e.g. you are getting pushed along by a team newing member) that I will do a recovery assessment and make a recommendation that a recovery stint in the car is required…   Bit like the nrl concussion test… it’s much better to recover for an hour in the car than crawl along slowing everyone else down – we aren’t trying to win any trophies ;)

 

Also, from experience remember to turn right after bungedore… not left.  ha ha!

Hey all, 
Can I confirm the start at moss vale, is it still 7. Is going to be 1 degree I believe nice and chilly. I think I have put enough ks, plenty of climbing that should prevent Dazzas 'concussion' rule on me. 
Look forward to seeing everyone again. Should be fun.

Hi Pete,
yes, the plan is to be leaving Moss Vale at 7am. For Friday in Moss Vale Weatherzone says an overnight low of 4%, so much warmer than your 1% :-)

I think advance warning to the pub at Tarago is a must, I believe Reynolds called them a week in advance last year to tell them a pack of hungry lasagna eating riders was going to descend at lunch on Friday? He may have also called ahead to Marulan?

Bungendore ended up being an unplanned  long stop last year, which in my opinion, was an error that contributed to a late arrival. Suggest no more than 20 minutes for our MT/AT planned breaks - we ended up having a few unplanned breaks too, which may eventuate again this year due to mechanicals etc - looking at you Lise, although the provision of homemade slice more than made up for the slight tyre delay!

Also we were late departing Moss Vale due to late arrival of car travellers so would implore all those taking the soft option not to be too soft on getting to Moss Vale with time to get yourselves and your bikes ready... or give it up already and join in the fun of leaving from Wollongong!

I support the Daz recovery call and accept that in my current form may well be the first to be tapped on the shoulder!

Looking forward to riding with you all. Weather looks great and thankfully no southerly busters are forecast! Just hope we don't get a re-run of that Tarago approach wind this year! If so, I'll be the one sheltering behind Mr Reynolds - or taking a seat in the car!

Morning T stop is at the Meridian Café Marulan.  Closed now but I might ring them in the morning for a heads up.  Have spoken to the folks at the Loaded Dog Bistro.  Attached is their lunch time menu.  I’m going to bring a copy on the ride and suggest that we make our selection at Morning T and send the car ahead to place our order 15 minutes before we get there. They open at 12.  Last year we got there after 1pm.  I think we can easily make it closer to 12 if we sharpen up on the morning schedule. 

 

Agree with SB’s suggestion of attempting to limit MT/AT to 20 minutes if we can.

Sounds good, lots of breaks and by my calculations that gets us in with heaps of time for Dave R. to get to airport etc.

 

Just a question on tools/kit.  Did the guys last year have a kit in the support car to do some above basic repairs?   I was going to put a spare tyre in my backpack (albeit a 23c), we might also need a chain breaker (my multi-tool has one),  BB Tool, Pedal Spanner, Cluster tool and Chain Whip, spare spokes (probably an individual thing).  I just remember an old Audax ride where someone broke a spoke on the rear drive side and having to contort it to get past the cassette.

Thanks Brian. I say, if the gear will fit into the Daz mobile it would be good to have it just in case. Also looks like you are designated ride mechanic for the ride.

BTW is a chain whip something that Daz can use to encourage the slow riders to keep going? Knowing in the past I'm the one last up the hills and lagging behind at the end of the day I'm not sure I'm happy thinking of what Daz and a chain whip might do!

Np Kirk, I think Andy will be designated mechanic.

 

I never thought about that as a use for the chain whip.  After looking at the climb after Bungendore I think I’ll leave it at home just in case it’s me at the back.

Sounds like a great crew to be riding with to Canberra. Even the strong riders can have a poor day so we will all do our best out there. Short breaks for a quick bite and rest stop are the best way to keep average pace.

Winds are not too bad for Friday.

Should be fun.
