Hi All,
the wise and venerable Dave Reynolds has suggested that the possibility of cancelling this year's ride to Canberra be considered for safety reasons so let's not leave this hanging so people have some time to change arrangements and possibly cancel accommodation bookings.
Below is the list of those I believe have said they were riding so it is up to you as a group make the call.
  • Luke Palma
  • Steve Bowden
  • Steven Harvey
  • Steve's friend
  • Pete Newing
  • Lise Newing
  • Brian Steemson
  • Scott Milliken
  • Andy Smith
  • Steve Rostirolla
  • Martin Jacobsen
  • Ian Duncan (riding to Moss Vale)
  • Daz Smith (Moss Vale - Wingello loop)
Please respond to this email so as a group you can make the call by COB Wednesday
Based on the current weather forecast for Friday do you want to:
  1. Ride
  2. Cancel

Arvo All
If the BOM is accurate and it remains the same it is giving pretty much the same forecast for Bowral, Goulburn and Canberra and good for sitting around a fireplace inside but not for cycling 200 - 300 km.
So my vote would be:

2. Cancel

Looks like the perfect storm (cf. BOM, Windy) to me - high winds and heavy rain all the way from MV to Canberra.

My opinion is to err on the side of safety and 2. Cancel.  There is always 2020.

Cheers,

Steve Harvey

I’m leaning towards “Cancelling”, but will wait until tomorrow to decide. I’m hoping for the weather report to improve.

I still have to get to Canberra on Saturday for the B4B ride.

If I don’t ride on Friday, I will be driving on Friday night, but with everything/everyone else, that Julie is taking to Canberra on Friday night, there will be no room for my bike on our bike rack. I’ll need to find another B4B car to take my bike on Friday night.

It is less organizing for me to ride to Canberra on Friday, but may not be practical with the weather.

Regards

Hello Scott,

If it is cancelled, then we will be driving down on Friday as well and will have room for another bike as well.

On behalf of Team Newing ... a couple of things ..

- Our strong preference is NOT to cancel - however we agree that riding in the rain all day is a bad idea.
- We are keen not to make a call too soon - weather forecasts often change a few days out - therefore we are not keen to make a call until the last possible moment - ie Wednesday evening if that is the last moment for people to change their travel plans.
- IF the ride is cancelled we will still be driving to Canberra on Friday with room for 5 additional bikes (and an extra person at a push) - probably leave around midday or mid-morning. IF we get to Golbourn and the weather is reasonable, we will be riding into Canberra from there.
- PS. Chris is also planning to ride on Friday.

Praying for good weather and safe arrival of Baby Butler this week :-)

I’m also keen to leave the call until as late as possible.  I’ve got non-refundable airline tix so I was thinking I might as well jump on the plane on Thursday and see what transpires.  If its cancelled I/we could do some local rides over the weekend (weather permitting of course J)

Sorry, more from me.   From this afternoon’s emails it would appear that, for the B4B riders, the switchover to alternative transport options is doable and doesn’t mandate a COB Wednesday final call.  Seems to me it could be made as late as Thursday arvo. Yes?

I am ok with waiting until Thursday afternoon, the only people it would be a problem for potentially are those wanting to cancel accommodation.

I’m now committed…….. well at least to taking my bike for a plane ride.  All boxed up and ready to go!

Latest forecast suggests we might avoid the rain for the Gong to MV leg and then wet for most of the day, clearing as we arrive in Canberra.

Praying for these wonderful drought breaking rains to fall all around us but not on us!

Cheers

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the confusion buddy, Kirk unfortunately is not riding with us this year, he had to go to Melbourne earlier in the week after receiving the exiting news that he will become a grandfather this week.

This means you will not be driving Kirks car down and I’m not sure how you planned to get back from Canberra, the Newing’s have a support car and I believe potentially there is a spot in that car? Pete can you confirm also.

Also there may be some other riders car at Moss Vale that could be driven also?

SO to summarise all the discussions we have had this week –

  • We are still pending at GO NO GO decision this afternoon at 4pm.
  • Riders leaving Unanderra Pools will be departing at 3:45am, ensuring we have plenty of time to arrive at Moss Vale before 7am.
  • Newings have a support car and will be taking our bags, Wollongong departures will be dropping the bags at the Newing residence tonight.

Give me a call later this after for more details and questions if you like – 0425366108

Kirk, Luke,

Bit confusing here. I have not booked accommodation so all good there.

It looks like I may cycle up to the start if there are riders leaving from the Unanderra pool. ( I can drop bags off at your place Kirk after work).

If the riders are not departing wollongong then I will drop bags and bike at your place Kirk and then possibly do the loop with Daz before becoming the support driver in your car Kirk.

If the whole event is cancelled then perhaps we can arrange a local ride in the morning (assuming the weather is ok on the coast).

Cheers,

Andy 0425459058

I currently have a booking in the  Newing bus on the way home but can  travel back with the Bowdens later in the day (makes sense as I’m camping at theirs Sat night). So that frees up a spot.
