Early warning: Friday 4th May

Hi All,

well the school year is back and I've been told that the Illawarra Christian School (ICS) Bike for Bibles event is on again this year starting on Saturday 5th May. This means that our traditional ride to Canberra prior to the ICS event can be on the Friday 4th May if we have enough interest. I will post th usual announcement on the FAC riders mailing list but I thought I'd get word out to those who've been involved or shown interest in the past and are on this mailing list.

First the usual disclaimers - The ride down is not associated with B4B or ICS in any way. It is just a group of riders enjoying the camaraderie a long day out on their bikes. Given this situation anyone is welcome to ride with the following assumptions:

·        you are physically capable of riding the distance of around 190km in a day (from Moss Vale to Dickson via a yet to be decided route)

·        you have a bike capable of carrying you the aforementioned distance :-)

·        are willing to organise you own accommodation in Dickson for Friday night (ICS B4B event participants have access to free floorboards available to sleep on in a Emmaus school hall in Dickson). Your own accommodation also guarantees you a hot shower at the end of the day ;-)

The usual topic of discussion when the ride down comes up is the route which also determines how long the actual ride is on the day. Also, although the title of the mailing group indicates we start from Moss Vale there are also a small group who start from Wollongong and ride up to Moss Vale.

 

I am happy to organise things again this year so let me know if you're coming or if there is someone else who you think would like to join us.

One other note. I did let Dave Reynolds know about the ride already but apparently he is starting a ride from Sydney to the Gold Coast on Saturday 5th May so at the moment he is out

Thanks Mr Barrett. Huge bummer that this is the day before the Sydney to Surfers gig as the Canberra ride is a highlight of my annual ride calendar. 

It's possible that I may not do the surfers thing in which case I'm in for Canberra. Of course there is the intriguing possibility of riding to Canberra on Friday then somehow getting back to Sydney in time for the Saturday rollout. 😜

Lise and I are keen to crack 200K this year (185K from Moss Vale last year) - so while starting from Wollongong and going up MacPass is probably out of the question, keen to start from the Pie Shop and roll into Moss Vale with the guys starting from the gong to get the additional 15K

I am well keen but given my recent injury I doubt my fitness will be where it needs to be - and I only just survived last year!

So count me in if I can get some rehab and fitness before then and count me in for support car duties if I can’t.

I'm keen to ride with you guys again in May and plan to start in MV with Mr Steemson and co (plus a few Dickson laps afterwards to get to the magic 200).  My wife and I will be making a Canberra weekend of it this year.  Looking forward to it.  And of course riding with Mr Reynolds before he rides from Sydney back to the Gold Coast ...

Thanks Kirk for getting the ball rolling again. I’m a likely starter.

We’ve discussed route options in previous years, and for the last couple have taken the Bungonia/ Tarago/ Bungendore option primarily as it keeps us off the Hume compared with previous Goulburn/ Gunning route. Anyone open to an alternative this year? I knocked this one up http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1942980509 which takes us through Nowra, Neriga and Braidwood.Key features are:

• 267km total, so 12km longer than last year. For those wanting 200km catching a train to Bomaderry would be a good starting option.
• It’s different to previous (change is as good as a holiday).
• The climbing looks a lot gentler than Mac pass, noting most of it starts after Nowra.
• The new Princes Hway to Berry is a great ride, and I believe the Neriga road to Oallen is all sealed. After Oallen we turn left onto the road into Tarago as per previous years.

Alas, 30km of unsealed road after Nerriga, before Braidwood. Took the trip 2 weeks ago.

The route I made turns off just after Neriga, missing Braidwood - I believe it is all sealed. Going via Braidwood is also 14km longer and more climbing.

Just to put it out there...the Greengrocer Cafe and Bike shop is open in Goulburn again now and this has been a favorite lunch stop in previous years.

My favorite is the Merino Cafe at Gunning - but that has been off the route for a few years now.

But Greengrocer is a good second favorite.

Though to get to Goulburn via back roads wasn't there an extra 25 km and a bit of climbing?  (I'm sort of up for it but ...)

Mmmmm.......we get back from 3 weeks in Central Australia 5 days before the ride so unfortunately I'm not going to be ready for 200k so if needed I can do the ride support thing if SB is riding or wants to ride part of it or maybe we do half each. See how he is going closer to the date.

Although an unlikely starter, my 2 bobs worth on the route……  Whilst Mr Duncan’s suggestion sounds worth a look, votes have not been pouring in in favour.  Thus, assuming for the moment that it is still a Moss Vale start (or W’gong for the keen), where to from there?  As nice as the Greengrocer is, if it meant a return to significant use of the Hume I’d say it wasn’t worth it.  We could go south from Marulan to Bungonia and then head northwest across to Goulburn via Mountain Ash Rd.  Strava shows this as only 16k’s longer (95 instead of 79 from Moss Vale) but with nearly 200m more climbing (955 compared to 762).  Having made Goulburn the lunch stop then commits us to a period on the Hume with various jumping off points depending on the final route to Canberra and whether or not we want to include Merino Café in Gunning. 

 

An option which avoids Hume, includes Greengrocer but excludes Merino is to proceed from Goulburn to Tarago via Braidwood Rd.  Loooong time since I’ve driven that route so I don’t know how bike friendly it is.  Goulburn is marked on the elevation profile below.  Nice downhill run to lunch but a long steady climb thereafter.  Route accessible at: http://www.strava.com/routes/12028306.  All things being equal (as they never are), if I were participating I’d be in favour of the route as used for the past couple of years

·        you have a bike capable of carrying you the aforementioned distance :-)

·        are willing to organise you own accommodation in Dickson for Friday night (ICS B4B event participants have access to free floorboards available to sleep on in a Emmaus school hall in Dickson). Your own accommodation also guarantees you a hot shower at the end of the day ;-)

 

The usual topic of discussion when the ride down comes up is the route which also determines how long the actual ride is on the day. Also, although the title of the mailing group indicates we start from Moss Vale there are also a small group who start from Wollongong and ride up to Moss Vale.

 

I am happy to organise things again this year so let me know if you're coming or if there is someone else who you think would like to join us.

 

One other note. I did let Dave Reynolds know about the ride already but apparently he is starting a ride from Sydney to the Gold Coast on Saturday 5th May so at the moment he is out

The road from Goulburn through Lake Bathurst and on to Tarago is fine - I often drive it. Takes you past Wakefield Park, so we could stop there and crack a few hot laps ?

I drove the Nowra to Nerriga route on the weekend. I think the ascent to Nerriga would be taxing. The gradient isn’t that high but it is constantly climbing. Would certainly be a challenge - not so much for me cause I’m in the support car, but for the rest of the crew...

Of course I have been known to panic about minor climbs previously.

I think a change from the last two years route is a good idea but wouldn't be keen to ride the down the south coast route. I've spoken with a number of riders who have ridden down that way and recommend avoiding whole sections. 

I like the idea of the route from Marulan off the Hume and back up to Goulburn although apart from the rubbish on the shoulder of the Hume I haven't minded the ride direct from Marulan to Goulburn in the past. 

The Greengrocer did in fact burn down 2 years ago but has now been rebuilt and reopened - http://www.greengrocercycling.com.au/

Personally I really enjoyed the year we rode from Goulburn to Gunning and then directly south to Canberra (https://www.strava.com/activities/295922548). By my reckoning this will mean that with the extra 16kms hoping off the Hume between Marulan and Goulburn would put those who started at Moss Vale over the 200kms for the day. A few of us ended up doing laps of Dickson that year so we could hit the 200km mark and I know there are few people who were considering starting at Robertson just so they could do the same this year so this route would mean more starting from Moss Vale together so the logistics of getting there would potentially be easier sharing lifts.

Maybe, if you have the time, you can map it out for us :-)

I like it. 209kms for the day is a nice challenge and we would really have to watch the length of the major breaks and make sure we start at 7 from MV. If you are riding I'm nominating you as chief whip :-)

It will be crucial for us to have at least one support car with us (hopefully confirmed as Steve Bowden) and with a couple of people expressing interest in joining the ride but not riding  for the full distance we may be able to swing a second car that can be tag team driven by guys who want to take turns at riding/driving.

The decision has to be the group's. What is everyone else's view on this route?

I’m fine with this route - certainly I like the idea of something different from the last 2 years. 

Maybe it is time for a roll call of Wollongong starters? We meet at Unanderra pool at 4am, and this normally gets us to Moss Vale by around 645. It is 66km/ 1200m to Moss Vale.

Alongside the Hume is fine, with the main issue being the few narrow and longish bridges between Marulan and Goulburn - not a good feeling having a truck bearing down on you at 110 with no shoulder available. The Bungonia dog leg solves that - I rode it 25 odd years ago and remember it as a tough pull out of Bungonia. Then again it was on a mountain bike with 30kg of panniers.

I’ve ridden the Princes Hway to Ulladulla on several occasions, and with the new highway in it is a glorious run - Berry and back is a very pleasant, safe and quite fast 115km. So I have to respectfully disagree with Kirk’s mates. Maybe next year…

Wollongong start would be very tempting if we weren't riding 300k over the following 3 days.

Ian I would certainly be very keen to start from the Gong. (I think Pete too) 

My/ our issue is that the three following days (300km)I'm riding and responsible for a group of kids, keeping them safe. 

Riding up a hill at 6km /hr is more taxing than hammering a hill :-/ especially when you do it for 3 days

( last year Jojo vomited all night until 5am sat -so I also did it on no sleep :-/

All being equal - I will be in - double tonne from mossvale  will be great as I was struggling to hold Captain Kirks wheel into Canberra last year after I put a Mac Pass into the legs.
