Howdy folks, I’ve commented earlier that the 2017 ride seemed to be full of stops and starts.  I’ve gone back to my Strava record.  Here’s how it unfolded.

Departed Moss Vale: 7:20am.   (see note on this later)

Stopped Wingello: 8:30am (Ride time: 1 hr 10min, distance 32 km)

Depart Wingello: 8:42am (stop time 12 min)

Arrive Marulan: 9:17 (Ride time 35min, dist 19km)

Depart Marulan: 9:55am (stop time 38min)

Arrive Tarago: 12:35pm (Ride time 2 hrs 40 min, dist 68km).  There were a couple of regroup stops in this leg and wicked head winds when we turned west towards Tarago.

Depart Tarago: 1:45pm (stop time 1 hr 10min)

Arrive Bungendore: 2:55pm (Ride time 1 hr 10min, dist 32km)

Depart Bungendore: 3:20pm (Stop time: 25 min)

Arrive Canberra: 5:05pm (ride time 1 hr 45min, dist 37km)

I’d suggest:

1.       No stop at Wingello – apart from loo stop if required.  The folk on this ride should be able to ride 51ks (M’Vale to Marulan) in one stint, using water and food carried with them.

2.       Aim for 30 min at Marulan however if we’ve started on time and skipped Wingello, the pressure is off

3.       We should be able to do lunch in 45min to 1 hour max.  It might be possible to order ahead??

4.       Bungendore stop probably can’t do in much less than above.

We also need to talk about the start time.  Its been officially set at 7am from MV, but we never achieve that.  I notice on the above strava analysis, the Wollongong riders were about 8min late out of Unanderra and into Moss Vale at 6:56am.  There’s always a dive across the road for a coffee which adds to the delay.  I’d suggest a 3:45am start is in order.

Cheers

David

Great news Dave. Looking forward to riding with you again and catching up. Ian Duncan was also tossing up riding up to Moss Vale and back or riding the whole day. Haven't heard what his decision is yet.

I've done a straw poll with a few of those riding as I've chatted with them over the past week and whilst no one has a strong opinion about one over the other there does seem to be a leaning towards the 2017 route. Consensus seem to be that it keeps us off the Hume except for the short bit around Marulan and being a bit shorter allows some leeway around arrival in Canberra at the end of the day if we have strong headwinds again. If the weather conditions are adverse we are still likely to arrive before dark and if the conditions are good and we arrive with plenty of time those that want to hit the 200km or 300km goal for the day can continue on around the surrounds or the lake.

So let me propose the 2017 route as the Captain's Call for this year. If anyone feels strongly about doing the 2018 route again this year please feel free speak up as this ride is about an enjoyable day ride that everyone involved wants to do. I personally like the 2018 route and with reasonable weather and an eye on stoppage time it makes for a great day in the saddle through some beautiful countryside.

We should also sort out who needs lifts to Moss Vale on Friday morning and who needs a lift back to Wollongong on Saturday morning as well who has free seats for both.

I haven't yet booked any accommodation as Karen is hasn't decided if she will be driving down on the Friday or not.

Pete Newing, can I confirm that spot in Saturday return vehicle?

Accommodation.  I’m happy to share with anyone who already has a booking with a spare bed or is yet to make a booking.

Route? Seems to be either the 2017 or 2018 route.  Looks like we need a Captain’s call.  (then we can all pile in and tell him why it should be the other one! J)

Yes SB, much to like about the 2017 Bungendore route. I’m not obsessed with Greengrocer either but Merino Cafe.... hard to pass on that carrot cake in the afternoon sun!!

In 2017, due to the distance to a later lunch in Tarago we decided to have a morning T stop in Marulan instead of an arvo T stop. However we ended up still stopping in Wingello enroute to Marulan and an unscheduled arvo T in Bundendore. Too many stops and starts across the day and got into town in the dark.

2018 stops in Goulburn and Gunning were well spaced and it felt like we had more momentum over the course of the day.

Happy to do the 2017 route again but we need to re-assess the stops and be disciplined about them.

Hi Kirk,

My route preference would be to do the route from last year again because it is longer and has more elevation. PLUS it would be nice to ride it in a touch easier conditions!!

Just an update on myself and my friends that were going to ride with us, I can confirm that Mitch is not unavailable, mix up with dates and his wife booked them on a holiday, lets just say he is not very happy about it haha. Joel is not available also. So it will just be me joining the guys riding from Wollongong.

In regards to accommodation we will now be staying with our friends in Dixon for the weekend.

Hi Kirk,

I don’t mind which route is selected. They are all going to hurt!

I’d prefer the route with the least amount of rain and headwinds.

Milliken’s are booked into the “Capital Executive Apartment Hotel, Braddon”. Down the road from Brian’s hotel.

Hi Kirk,

I’m in at this stage, with any luck back on the bike next weekend in plenty of time if I get the all clear next Thursday.

Plenty of strong riders to sit in behind in any case.

The Steemson family is booked into the Pacific Suites for the weekend, we’re meeting some friends down there.

I’ll sit on the fence on the route, although last years route had some nice stops it was impacted by the wind but at least we got a tail wind into Canberra. We might just need to watch the length of the lunch break if we get bad weather so we’re not arriving in the dark.  And we should make sure we don’t get broken up like we did last year going in to Goulburn.

Subject: [moss-vale-2-crookwell-ride] This year's Ride to Canberra Route?

Hi All,

5 weeks tomorrow so its about time I got the discussion rolling again. Here are a couple questions/topics we need to sort out.

  1. Route: we have 2 or 3 alternative routes we have ridden in the past, all resulting in differing distance and elevation. We are by no means locked into doing any of these but consensus has always been that we start from the Highlands (with some riding there from Wollongong first). Here are the 3 past routes on Strava
Moss Vale to Canberra via Gunning but freeway from Marulan to Goulburn (2015) - 200kms, 1888m elevation
Moss Vale to Canberra via Bungendore (2017) -  186kms, 1800m elevation
Moss Vale to Canberra via Gunning (2018) -  209kms, 2005m elevation
  2. Support Car: We still have nobody running a support car. If there is anyone on the mailing list that isn't up for riding this year but might be interested in helping out driving a support car let us know. We have done the ride a number of years with no support car but it does mean you have to carry more on the day and we would have to sort out getting overnight bags to Canberra.
  3. Accomodation: has anyone already booked accommodation or can recommend some nearby. I had a quick look and there seem to plenty of options nearby.

Our current confirmed riders and start point are:

·         Kirk (Moss Vale)

·         Col Moodie (Wollongong)

·         Scott Delfs  (Wollongong)

·         Luke Palma (?)

·         Mitch Blows (?)

·         Luke's other friend (?)

·         Steve Bowden  (Wollongong)

·         Steven Harvey  (Moss Vale)

·         Pete Newing  (Moss Vale)

·         Lise Newing  (Moss Vale)

·         Brian Steemson (?)

·         Scott Milliken   (Moss Vale)

·         Andy Smith   (?)

·         Steve Rostirolla (Moss Vale)

·         Chris Newing (for part of the ride)  (Moss Vale)

Dave Reynolds is still a maybe and no word from Ian Duncan.

Regards,

Kirk.

Hi Dave,
love your work.

Some notes on the timings.
  • 7am start from Moss Vale is the aim. Last year we were much later but given what the Wollongong starters had to deal with on the ride up nobody was complaining.
  • I think 12 minutes at Wingello is in keeping with our usual plan to only stop for 10 minutes for a nature break, clothing adjustments and eat something if necessary. I seem to recall some have actually grabbed a coffee there in the past too. I would rather have the extra time at the arvo tea break than here.
  • Marulan - in 2017 we actually rode into Marulan for morning tea and they weren't that quick making coffee. Last year we simply pulled into the service center on the highway. I don't believe we stopped anywhere near as long although someone did have to fix a flat. This also meant we were back on the road much faster after the stop. I'm happy to see what everyone wants to do but I'm happy to skip riding into Marulan again.
  • Lunch at Tarago. I think the aim was to stop for an hour but I recall it did take time to serve everyone's lunches. My lunch was one of the last out and  some were almost finished as I was starting. If we can order ahead this would possibly pull in the 10 minutes and keep us to 1 hour.
  • Bungerdore break - if we target 30 minutes we should be ok here and if conditions are good and we have time we can always take a little longer if needed
What do others think? At the moment it feels like just Dave and I are deciding everything.

Kirk.

Thanks Dave and Kirk for showing your usual leadership on the finer details of the ride.

There’s nothing stopping us targeting a 7.15 am start, this seems to fit in better with the Wollongong starters, gives them a chance for a break.

Everything else I pretty much agree with.  The Wingello stop just seems to allow for a quick comfort stop (after over hydrating before the ride) and a chance to peal off a layer or 2 once warmed up.

Agree that the morning tea stop at Marulan was a little slow I seem to recall one or 2 only getting their coffee when we were about to leave, so the service centre might work better.

Pre-ordering for lunch might be a good idea, (is that for 20 odd Loaded Dog burgers 😊). Maybe a phone call when we think we’re 30 minutes out.

The other thing is that we need to stick together this year, in 2017 I think we stuck together pretty well, we might have been a bit disorganized coming out of Bungendore.  Last year we split up a bit on Mountain Ash Road which made it a had slog getting into Goulburn into the head wind.

I’ve just tried to find the menu for the loaded Dog restaurant in Tarago but it is unavailable at the moment as there is a new one on its way.
I can ring tomorrow and see if they have some more info?

We did have to wait a while for our lunches once we ordered.
Pre Ordering is a great idea : )

Happy for you to tweak the timing of the Rests and breaks.

It was pretty dark when we got in last year- that wicked headwind didn’t help!

It’s all about the lunch location. If lunch is Goulburn then you don’t need a major stop mid-way from MVale to there. A brief stop at Wingello or on the highway in Marulan works nicely in that case.

MTea at Meridian in Marulan town was only introduced when Tarago became the lunch spot as it is further and considered a bit of a stretch without a ‘proper’ break. Personally that doesn’t bother me. I’d be happy to push thru to Tarago for the first major stop.

So...... If we DO have a major stop at Marulan it makes no sense to stop at Wingello as Marulan is only another 19ks down the road.

I’d be happy to explore not having a major stop in Marulan....  maybe its Wingello then  another brief stop about halfway from there to Tarago. No major towns on that route so it could be a roadside setup with some home baked goodies and a water keg on board. I’d be quite happy with that arrangement but the coffee junkies might beg to differ. 😜

This would get us to lunch and arvo T sooner taking pressure of the back end of the ride.

It’s been claimed by some faceless individual (who shall remain nameless but goes by the initials SB) that every year I get obsessed about routes and timings.  What can I say other than ‘it’s a fair cop’.  Here’s a potential re-think of the rest-stop strategy.

·         Traditional stop at Wingello or at the servo in Marulan if everyone wants to keep rolling at Wingello

·         Earlier lunch at Johnno’s General Store south of Bungonia.  It looks like a bit of a dive but there are positive reviews online, mentioning good food, fast service, good portion sizes (possibly all posted by the proprietor!).  I phoned them and they are open on Fridays and said they could cater for a bunch of our size.  Currently trying to access a menu but their page seems to be offline

·         Skip the Loaded Dog in Tarago and ride thru to Bungendore for a decent arvo T stop.  Throw in a brief refresher stop in Tarago if needed.

Wingello to Johnno’s is 50ks.  Johnno’s to Tarago is 35.  Another 30 to Bungendore.

When I get access to Johnno’s menu I’ll post it.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
I had a quick look at the info about Johnno's. My main concern would be that it is takeaway and there is nowhere for us to sit out of the elements. The Loaded Dog had plenty of room for us all to sit inside.
