ASAK,
I am an American, I was not married to an Arab, I had Arabic clients
and was curious about the religion. I converted to Islam 6 years ago.
I moved my 4 children and myself to Amman, Jordan so they could learn
Islam and the Arabic culture. I am not going to relocate back to
America. My children ages are M-19, F-16, M-14, M-11. I am considering
Winston -Salem. I can move anywhere in Forsyth County. Is there an
area that anyone would recommend? I want to rent a 3-4 bedroom house
with land if possible. Can you find the Arabic food and restaurants?
Also I would really like to know if there is a women’s group?

Sincerely,

Globaled

Assalaamu alaykum,

Hi Globaled,

My mother is Egyptian and father American, and I recently married to an Egyptian (Oct. 28, 2009).  I can assure you that you will find plenty of Muslims in the Winston-Salem area, though we have a relatively small, but tight community.  And you will find Arabs and Arabic stores in our greater metropolitan area.  Our community is a diverse one at the Community Mosque.  Among our many members some are new American converts of all ethnicities (black, white, hispanic) and immigrants too (African, South Asian, Middle East).

Within 40 minutes of our Mosque there are Muslims and you can find Arabic food/restaurants.  Just down the street from our Mosque is a Muslim shop, Hassan's Meat Market, which sells Halal meats and Islamic dress.  Further away there are other stores, including a Middle Eastern grocery store (maybe 10 minutes away) and in Greensboro (25-30 minutes away) there are more middle eastern food stores and restaurants.

One of the great things about Winston-Salem is that it is a diverse city with a multitude of unique neighborhoods.  The suburban areas tend to have homes with more land for a cheaper price, but the homes in the city tend to be more conveniently located to shopping and work.

At our Mosque the women's group is very active and the Imam's wife, Sofia, along with other women, takes active leadership roles in the women's group and in various activities in the Mosque.  I hope you will stop by our Mosque, it is such a wonderful place.

Take care,
Br. Taric
Assalaamu alaykum.
