Hello members,

Greetings and a very Happy New Year 2020. I pray all is moving on well in our respective engagements and families.
The new year has started with some very desired changes in the management in Mvara Secondary School. Finally we have the confirmation from the Ministry of Education and Sports (see attached) of the transfer of Mr. Matua Eliakim to Mvara Secondary School from Otrave Secondary School. This has been the desire of a number of members of MOSA and we are grateful that this wish has been granted and we thank everyone who in one way or another worked behind the scenes to achieve this.

The other desired change is the composition of the current Parents Teachers Association (PTA Executive). We now have in the PTA executive persons of unquestionable committment to see drastic changes in Mvara and support the school administration perform better. These are Mr. Edward Endraa (Chairman) and Mr. Dranduga Augustus (The vice Chairman).

With this structures in place, we are of the opinion that the following should define our next course of action:
  1. Organise a stakeholders meeting involving PTA, academic and non academic staff, Parents, Old students, Board of Governors and representatives of the Diocesan Education Committee and the Foundation Board. The focus of this meeting will be to discuss issues that have led the the dismal performance of Mvara over the last years and led to the low morale of teachers, decline in enrollment and stakeholder discontent at the school. The details of the dates and venue will be communicated upon consultation with all involved.
  2.  Organise a meeting for MOSA to review its activities and plan the next course of action with the different groups and members of MOSA.

Thank you for the update. The changes have come timely. The Executive Committee can come up with plans of engagement as already highlighted in your email and fix concrete dates for the meetings and inform the members early enough so that more members can plan to attend the meetings, especially those who do not live nearby.

It's good news to see the change as l was not happy to see my former school suffering from good adminstration.
I thank God 💯 percent  and l hope things will change and l wish day part is removed for it has made the school  to loose it's former glory.just thinking anyway.

This is good news for start of the year. The expectations of Mvara SS are so high from all interested parties and we need someone who absolutely understands this with the will to put in place Systems to address these expectations fully. Of course it can't be done alone but with support from all these stakeholders.

Thanks for the info and the proposals and wish the new team the best. However these changes alone may not provide the magic bullet to turn things around in the school unless the causes of under performance and indiscipline of the students is clearly brought to light and solutions sought to address the same.

The day section might not be the major challenge at Mvara ss. Did you know that in the  2019 S4 Joint Mock for West Nile only one student passed in First Grade and the student was from the day section????

A holistic review is essential. And the earlier the meeting, the better for the best way forward.

I would like to thank the chairman for the timely information to members. Please take note of members contributions, the Mvara we want should be the Mvara we sherry as our backbone in education for what we are today in society at different capacity. The question of discipline, academic performance of students, students, teachers and administration relationship,foundation body role, welfare of students in term of feeding, classrooms, library,dormitories etc needed to be addressed and benchmark done for better improvement.
I would propose that a minimum pass mark put in place for a student to be promoted to the next class, failure you try somewhere else. Otherwise, i look forward this time to participate fully in Mvara programme.

I thank everyone for the ongoing discussions. Concerning promotions to the next class, it should not just be the minimum marks which does not mean anything, but what has the student achieved and this must be reported objectively. Otherwise, all students will be sent away for purportedly not having attained the minimum marks. 
Its high time we moved away from norm referenced assessment to criterion referenced assessment, where we measure and individuals achievements of the learning outcomes rather than compare a student against others. This doesn't make meaning, since we are different individuals with different abilities. If you send away a student, where do you expect the student to go? Will such a student improve in his/her achievements by changing environment or trying elsewhere? Why not help such a student do to a remedial learning? 
I thought the essence of students going to school is not just passing, but to prepare them to become useful citizens who can competitively survive in the world of work today. By the way, not everyone should go to A' level and then to the university compulsorily! Others can branch of to the Vocational or TVET institutions. This will not mean you're a failure!
I'll have more to discuss!

My proposal was in good faith not to deprive any learner, looking backward when we were in schools, there were some minimum standard put in place to encourage students to fully participate in all school activities. You know my brother to be honest with you UPE programme is good but it has got some challenges which are translated into secondary education. I totally agree with you, our young generation mostly think of degrees and yet we have vocational and technical training institutions with career progression. We need a stakeholders  meeting to forge away forward, otherwise it is not only Mvara but almost all good traditional Secondary schools in West Nile are limping namely Ombaci, Nyapea, Ombatini, Warr girls etc.

I wouldn't agree more and as we look at a way of resourcing every student to excell according to their abilities, the teachers will need to be retooled to work with the students and all stakeholders to achieve the desired objective of education.
All this is possible as each stakeholder fits in the puzzle.

Thank you all Members for your submission. 
I would like to add that education is a 3 dimension figure (Triangle in particular)

The Students and Parents make the base of Triangle and the School ( Teachers &Mgt) at the top of the triangle.

Let's strength the role of each pillar that supports education. Today,I believe change of Mgt is made but the students and parents are not changed.

Students have to be smart and disciplined , making sure they attend all classes and books checked thoroughly for consistency in all subject's. Attend preps and school function.

Teachers need to supervise learner's at all cost, they should be paid allowance for extra work like prep supervision,extra lessons taught,practicals conducted weekly, setting and marking monthly exams to check on progress of learning etc.

Mgt should support teachers and students in making sure smooth operations of the school takes place. Prepare for parent's /Students engagement at school.list is endless.

I have been brief but it takes alot to raise up a child , alot of surcrifies to be made on student, teachers, parents and school.

Am Currently teaching MTC & CHEM.

Setting and marking of monthly tests does not improve learning. Students are failing because they're not learning enough, but there's too much teaching.
Let's do it differently this time round. Give them enough time to consolidate what the teachers give and let teachers facilitate and guide appropriately. Do a classroom based assessment rather than wait for end of month!

Thanks Mr Droti for your views/guidance/suggestions.

So often we have very resourceful persons as Old students who share useful information here which information rarely reaches the actual to be consumers. Hopefully, the executives would ensure such knowledge is tapped and put in the right place.

As regards Monthly Tests, I would want to think that tests serve various purposes among others assessing students level of understanding of covered or uncovered topics; students reasoning; letting students get used to sitting tests and exams; testing students question-answering approaches; empowering students to understand questions approach to guide their reading.

In other places, students are given topical tests to test students level of understanding of such a topic; weekly tests in key subjects such as MTC and English, practicals etc. This may or not be besides monthly tests. However school settings and cultures differ. Each school knows which subjects deliver division ones and which ones require more attention as they affect a students ability to get division 1; These are MTC and English.

Given the academics climate of today in Uganda where everyone is looking for results, institutions are forced to do what it takes to get results. We must not ignore this fact because we are part.

In my view, there need an opportunity for our technical team to often have round table discussions with school administrators particularly DOS and his team to share such ideas and forge a workable approach for the school.

I rest my case.

I highly appreciate  MOSA members' proposals in order to leverage Mvara Academic performance.  However, there are certain minor issues that we often take for granted but by the end of it all, they very much matter. I am not a professional educationist. Let us, I think consider the so-called minor issues like teacher-student relationships which to my understanding affect performance very much. If only students and teachers take Mvara as their second and in harmony, listening to one another and accepting themselves as they are, there ought to b  better performance. Discipline and commitment to study and teach will not be a problem.
  Secondly, most parents of late do not at ll play their part in their children's academic enhancement. It is not only about providing scholastics materials, payment of school fees, visiting students, dumping them in school, and off they go.  Parents must become part of their children's study. Mentoring and implanting confidence in children is very important in enhancing their academic performance.
Though some of us are code-named BBC( born before the computer), our parents mentored us very well, and implanted confidence in us, thus we were able to make a breakthrough in studies, and that's why we are what we are today.
I really don't have the option of actually reach out to parents and mentoring them about their responsibilities concerning children's studies. However,  I think the diocese should take a lead in reaching out to parents through the various churches, and mentor them on their primary responsibility of drilling their children to value studies.
My concern is not to hurt anybody. I am just sharing with you what we have been doing in the University where I work, and there as been tremendous academic excellence, at least 95% of our graduates not many though get employed even during internship, and before graduation( why? well behaved, responsible, knowledgeable, morally perfect and christ-centered students).

Its good to note the changes in our great School Mvara, But the question is Change is a good thing But How to Manage the change is the most important aspect.

We hope these changes will bring Glory to our School in academic performances. Thank you very much!

 Great response from national curriculum specialist, I personally never passed in first grade but i have turned out to be a great electrical engineer. Thats why the ministry of education wants to change the secondary school curriculum where one has an option of joining vocational technical training after senior three if he thinks he cant manage senior four UNEB exams,i think that will make alot of sense coz most students just cram their notes to pass exams but not to acquire knowledge and skills.

Hello team,
Objectively I am slowly following on this Curriculum changes. if someone has to join a vocational, why should he/she go up to S.3?, 
Trust me people will just want to reach s.3 whether there is brain development in understanding any thing or not.
If the assessment to get to the next level isn't based on learning out comes, how will the development be assessed?
Remedial learning is to me a befitting one but to allow no one fail is the demise of Education in Uganda.
The system that we are so much talking I'll of is what we went through and we have been cherishing for a long while.
We need to find justifiable reasons before we make changes to the curriculum.
Have we even piloted the new curriculum? Is it working? 
Do we have the funds to implement and even train the teachers? 
I overheard at Namagunga during training, Teacher's were hardly or not given transport for going back home.

The Technical/Vocational that are there even have theory than what skills some one needs to survive with. 
Someone needs to undergo more practical training away from school to survive yet there are no existing strategic programs of the government in enabling that.
    I am really interested in getting convinced about this change of Curriculum.
