Hike to Calabasas Peak, Sunday, August 21 2011
Letï؟½s hike to Calabasas Peak! The hike is 8 miles long with a 1,750 foot elevation gain. Most of the hike is moderate to average except at the end where we ascend a short but steep climb to the Calabasas Peak ï؟½ at 2,163 feet. From the top of the peak you can see both San Fernando Valley and much of Malibu. We will break for lunch at the peak. For those who donï؟½t feel like climbing to the peak, there is an alternative site nearby for resting and eating. Since its summer, we will start at 9:15 am. The hike will probably last 4 hours.
IMPORTANT: All MOSAIC events require participants to sign a Liability Release Waiver at the event location. If you would like to read the waiver before the event, you can do so at http://www.mosaicla.org/signin.pdf . Please email the event leader if you have any questions about this.

Adamsville Avenue and Blueridge Court, Calabasas, CA 91302
HIKE START TIME: Meet at the trailhead at 9:00 A.M. (directions below); leave at 9:15 A.M. SHARP!!
HIKE END TIME: 1:30 P.M. (Approximately)
BRING: Water (two liters recommended), hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, Lunch, a snack to share.
FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or trail running shoes are recommended, ABSOLUTELY NO sandals or other open-toe shoes, flip flops, casual shoes or high heels.

Park at the end of Adamsville Avenue in Woodland Hills; parking is free
DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:
Take the Ventura Freeway (US 101) to the Valley Circle/Mulholland Exit. Head south on Mulholland Dr. and then turn right (west) on Mulholland Highway in Woodland Hills to Eddingham Ave; turn left and go to Adamsville Avenue; turn right and park at the end of the street by Blueridge Court. Please check with either your map, Mapquest or GPS before leaving.
CARPOOL POINTS:
We will carpool from the West side, the Valley and Orange County (See below).
West LA Carpool
We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 8:00 A.M. and leave at 8:15 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.
Valley Carpool
We will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas Station across from Marriot Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 8:15 A.M. and leave at 8:30 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool
We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy (formerly SavOn Drugs) - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Islands, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy at 7:45 A.M. and leave at 8:00 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.

Hike to Switzer Falls, Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
Come share in the beauty of this paradise so close to L.A. View remnants of the resort that catered to celebrities. Hike is 4 miles round trip along the Arroyo Seco stream and is rated intermediate. We will pass by a number of natural pools and visit the falls on our hike back. There is a steep ¼ mile incline at the end of the hike, which can be avoided by parking at the lower parking lot. We may swim in the pools so bring a bathing suit. Long sleeves recommended due to possible dense brush on some parts of the trail, and possible poison oak. PLEASE NOTE: A Wilderness Parking Permit is required and can be obtained at the Clear Creek Info station. Carpooling is highly recommended due to limited parking. DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:
FROM THE WESTSIDE:
Fwy 10E 7 miles to 110N 4 miles to 5N 2 miles to 2N 8 miles to 210E 1 mile to Angeles Crest Highway 2N exit. Left at the light, 10 miles to trailhead. You will pass the junction of Angeles Crest & Angeles Forest (N3) highways and the Clear Creek Info station (on your right). A half a mile past info station, turn right at the entrance to Switzer Picnic area (mile marker 34.19). We will meet at the upper lot. Lower lot is closed. If the lot is full, backtrack and park in one of the turn-off areas along the road. Wilderness parking permit is required and can be obtained at the Clear Creek Info station. Carpooling is highly recommended due to limited parking.

FROM THE SF VALLEY:
Riverside Dr east ½ a mile to Woodman Ave right 1 block to 101E 3 miles to 134E 9 miles to 2N 4.3 miles to 210E and continue as above.
CARPOOL POINTS:Robertson and Venice Blvd Carpool: 9:00 A.M.
Meet at the western side of the parking lot of Albertson's supermarket, located on Venice Blvd, near Robertson Blvd (there is also an Office Max and a Starbucks Coffee in the same shopping center). Park on the side street (Durango Ave) next to the parking lot. This location is right next to the Robertson's Blvd exit off of the 10 freeway. If there is no Mosaic LA representative here form your own carpools. Please share the cost of transportation and parking, if any.
Riverside and Hazeltine carpool: 9:10 A.M.

Angeles Crest Highway carpool: 9:30 A.M.
Meet on Angeles Crest Highway just North of freeway 210 on the right side (Sierra Club carpool point). There will be no Mosaic LA representative here so form your own carpools.

Hike to Sturtevant Falls at Chantry Flats, Sunday, October 23rd, 2011
Follow an inspiringly picturesque trail along a stunningly beautiful creek for most of this fun 6-mile RT hike. This hike is rated Easy to Intermediate (depending on whether you do the loop or not) and it includes a stop at a waterfall and lunch break (and possible swim) along the stream. We may swim, weather permitting, so bring a swimming suit. A long sleeved shirt is recommended due to possible dense brush on some parts of the trail and possible poison oak.

We will meet by the water fountain. Wilderness parking permit is required. Parking is limited and carpooling is a must. If lot is full either wait for a while to see if somebody leaves or backtrack and look for a spot on the side of the road (only few spots are available by the road). There may be paid parking available. For $5 or $10 depending upon arrival time.
