"Holiday" Hike in Chatsworth Hills, Saturday, December 25, 2010 Easy-paced, 5-mile rt, 700' gain scenic hike above the hills in Chatsworth where you can see mountains and SFV cityscapes in all directions. The hike starts on the trailhead entrance to Chatsworth Park North, and winds through the old Stagecoach Trail - a once famous movie set (Rawhide, Bonanza, etc), also traveled by Wild West pioneers in the 1850s on their way to Santa Barbara. You can still see the wheel marks. The hike ends beyond the Rocky Peak park entrance on the other side of the 118 freeway.  Above the site, there is a very scenic rock-cropping where we can gaze out at the beautiful scenery on all four sides and grab a snack. We may even see deer or rabbits. We may lead this hike jointly with the Sierra Club. MEETING PLACE: Meet at the intersection of Lassen St and Valley Circle adjacent to the Oakwood Cemetery in Chatsworth. There is plenty of safe, free street parking! HIKE START TIME: Meet at the trailhead at 10 am. HIKE END TIME: 2 pm. BRING: Please bring 2 quarts of water, sturdy shoes, a day pack and a light snack. FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or trail running shoes recommended, ABSOLUTELY NO sandals or other open-toe shoes, flip flops, casual shoes or high heels. Possible house party at local venue in Chatsworth to follow...details to follow. DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD: Take the 101 West from the 405 freeway. Exit on Topanga Blvd and go North. Travel about 6 miles to Lassen St and turn Left. Travel about 1 mile on Lassen St until you reach Valley Circle. Make an immediate left and park on the side of the street near the Oakwood Cemetery. There is a Santa Monica Mountains Recreation sign in front of the trailhead. CARPOOL POINTS: We will carpool from the West side, the Valley and Orange County West LA Carpool We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 9:15 am. Valley Carpool We will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas Station across from Marriott Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 9:30 am. Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy (formerly SavOn Drugs) - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Islands, Target, etc. in the same parking lot.
