Hike in Santa Monica Mountains and Optional Dinner/Gelato afterwards, Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Come join MOSAIC Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for a Sunset hike in the Santa Monica Mountains, on Sunday, July 11th @ 5:30 PM. Marshall Ratinoff will lead this spectacular 6 mile loop hike with about 1,000 feet elevation gain in Mandeville Canyon, up to the San Vicente Mountain Park and a former military Nike Missile Control Site with an observation tower (as well as water and restrooms).

The park provides a glimpse into United States military history. Numerous self-guided interpretive displays explain how from 1956-1968, San Vicente Mountain was one of sixteen Los Angeles area Nike-Ajax supersonic anti-aircraft missile launch sites. During the Cold War, Nike sites were located in defensive rings surrounding key urban and industrial areas throughout the United States. This site contained ground-based radar and computer systems designed to detect and track hostile aircraft, and to guide the anti-aircraft missiles that would be launched from nearby Sepulveda Basin to their targets.

The original radar tower now provides visitors with spectacular 360 degree views of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Encino Reservoir and San Fernando Valley, and the Los Angeles Basin. It is one of the region’s premiere locations to watch a Western sunset.

Hike is a combination of fire roads and some steep ridge trails.  You should be in moderate hiking shape for this night hike.  The first part of the hike will be on a narrow trail and the rest of the hike will be on wide fire roads. At the halfway point, at the top, we will break to share our snacks before we head back down to our cars.  Optional dinner/coffee/snacks/dessert at a local shop afterward.

There are NO restrooms at the trailhead; if you need to use facilities, please do so before getting to the trailhead. Restrooms and water are at the halfway point, at the top.

For more info about the Nike Missile Tower, please see
http://www.lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=54

Kayaking/Canoeing on Alamitos Bay, Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for a fun paddle around Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. We will traverse the canals of Naples and oogle the gorgeous homes and yachts berthed there. Windsurfing is popular there too.  The beach is inviting for swimming or sunbathing.  No waves. But if you want to body surf there is a surf beach across the road.   We will rent or bring you own kayak or canoe.  Early morning paddling  is best because the water is calm and beautiful and the wind comes up later and that makes for challenging paddling!   A charming local eatery operates on the beach right by the kayak rentals where you can buy food or bring a picnic and food to share with the group.

No experience needed but you must be able to swim.   We will have a special rate of $5 /hr per person IF there are at least 20 rental participants in our group. So bring a friend!   Less than 20 and the fee is $8/hr per person for a single kayak or $15 for a double. No reservations needed.

IMPORTANT: All MOSAIC events require participants to sign a Liability Release Waiver at the event location. If you would like to read the waiver before the event, you can do so at http://www.mosaicla.org/signin.pdf. Please email the event leader if you have any questions about this.

Let's Hike to the Top of the World, Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Please join MOSAIC Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angels and Nexus for another joint outdoors adventure at Top of the World -- one of the more beautiful and scenic hikes in Orange County, where on a clear day you get views of Catalina and San Clemente islands! We will start at Top of the World and hike into Aliso Woods Canyon. This is a moderately strenuous 8+ mile hike with a 1 mile long hill with about 1,000 feet gain, at the end of the hike :) The hike overlooks the ocean at times and offers views of scenic canyon and coastal ridges. We will hike up and down a couple of smaller hills and on a semi-shaded trail amongst native plants and trees; however, there are many exposed areas (no shade) and on a sunny day, it can be VERY hot. So, bring plenty of water!

We will try to form a second group to do a less strenuous portion of the hike (NO guarantees though). We'll have lunch in a cool, shadowy cave :) For more info and/or to check on park closures call 949-923-2200 or visit http://www.ocparks.com/alisoandwoodcanyons/

Special Notes: -- you should be in pretty good shape for this hike; fit beginners are welcome.
