Pico Canyon Hike, Sunday, February 24, 2013 9:20 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for a hike in Pico Canyon, just west of Santa Clarita. The hike is 6 miles long with a 1,250 foot elevation gain. Most of the hike is moderate except for the last part which is somewhat steep. At the beginning of the hike, is a restored oil boom town of Mentryville. It was built in 1876 and was the original location for the Southern California Oil Boom. Then further up the trail, we will see a replica of an original oil derrick and the first commercially producing oil well in southern California. It was in operation from 1876 to the early 1990’s, making it the oldest producing oil well in the world! At the top of the trail, is wide plateau with grand vistas of all of Santa Clarita. We will have lunch here. The hike will probably last around 4 to 4.5 hours.

HIKE START TIME: Meet at the trail head at 9:20 A.M. (directions below); leave at 9:30 A.M. SHARP!!
HIKE END TIME: 2:00 P.M.
BRING: Be sure to bring water (two liters recommended), hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, Lunch, a snack to share, and a jacket, sweater or windbreaker, as it may get cool, and/or windy.
FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or trail running shoes recommended, ABSOLUTELY NO sandals or other open-toe shoes, flip flops, casual shoes or high heels.

DIRECTIONS TO TRAIL HEAD:
Take I-5 Freeway north to Santa Clarita and exit at Pico Canyon Road/Lyons Ave. Then left heading west on Pico Canyon for 2.5 miles to the gate park entrance. Then continue 0.4 miles to a dirt parking lot.
CARPOOL POINTS:
We will carpool from the West side, the Valley and Orange County (See beIow).
West LA Carpool
We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 8:30 A.M. and leave at 8:40 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic representatives.
Valley Carpool
We will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas Station across from Marriot Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 8:35 A.M. and leave at 8:45 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic representatives..
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool
We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Islands, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy at 8:00 A.M. and leave at 8:10 A.M. SHARP. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic representatives.

Eagle Rock via El Caballero Canyon, THIS Sunday, March 17 2013 9:45 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.
Celebrate St. Patty's Day, Jewish Style! Join all your fellow Irish Jews and Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for a hike to
Eagle Rock from the South end of Reseda
Blvd. in the San Fernando
Valley. The hike
is approximately 6.4 miles round trip with almost a 1,000 foot elevation gain. Most of the hike is moderate except for the
scramble to Eagle Rock at the end. Along
the trail, we will reach the crest of the Santa Monica
Mountains which offers a breath taking
view both the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles. We will break for lunch about mid-way
through the hike on top of Eagle Rock.
The hike will probably last about 4 – 4.5 hours.

PARKING INFORMATION:
There is curbside parking leading up to the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a fee the upper half of the curbside parking. Beware of the stop signs as you enter the park. They are easy to miss and the Santa Monica Conservancy has cameras to catch anyone who does not stop.
