Caballero Canyon to Eagle Rock in the Santa Monica Mountains, Sunday,
September 19, 2010
Moderately-paced , 5-mile round-trip, 800-feet gain scenic hike along
the Garapito trail in the Santa Monica Mountains to a rock outcropping
where you can see in all directions. The hike starts along the
trailhead entrance to Caballero Canyon on Reseda Blvd in Tarzana, and
meanders through some light brush to Mulholland dirt road. Taking the
Garapito shortcut to a the Temescal Canyon fireroad, we make our way
up to the Junction hub at the entrance to Topanga State Park. There is
a port-a-potty at the top. About a 1/2 mile later, there is a very
scenic rock-cropping where we can rest and gaze out at the beautiful
panoramic scenery on all four sides. We may see deer or rabbits.
IMPORTANT: All MOSAIC events require participants to sign a Liability
Release Waiver at the event location. If you would like to read the

HIKE MEETING PLACE:
Meet at the trailhead to Caballero Canyon, 1.5 miles South from the
intersection of Reseda Blvd and Ventura Blvd. There will be plenty of
free street parking. Do NOT go to the top of Reseda Blvd...that is too
far.
HIKE START TIME: Meet at the trail head at 2:30 pm.
HIKE END TIME: 5:30 pm...or 7:00 pm if eating dinner.
BRING: Please bring 2 quarts of water, sturdy shoes, a day pack and a
light snack.
FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or trail running shoes recommended. ABSOLUTELY
NO sandals or other open-toe shoes, flip flops, casual shoes or high
heels.
COST: Bring money (approx. $10) to join us for dinner or frozen yogurt
afterwards.
PETS: Sorry, pets are not permitted on this hike.

PARKING INFORMATION: Park on the side of Reseda Blvd near the
trailhead, 1.5 miles past the intersection of Reseda and Ventura Blvd.
Rain Policy: Rain cancels but drizzle or clouds don't
AFTER HIKE OPTIONAL EVENT: We tentatively plan on reconvening at Baja
Fresh in Tarzana (near Corbin and Ventura), and then a side trip to
Penguins for ice cream. There are also Thai and Sushi places nearby if
we change our minds.
DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:
Take the 101 West from the 405 freeway. Exit on Reseda Blvd and go
South (turn Left). Travel approximately 1.5 miles up the hills until
you see the brown Caballero Canyon trailhead sign on the left hand
side. This is NOT the end of Reseda Blvd. Park on the right or left
side of the road...it is free parking.
CARPOOL POINTS: We will carpool from the West side, the Valley and
Orange County (See below).
West LA Carpool
We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at
Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not
park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at
1:45 P.M. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there
are no Mosaic representatives.
Valley Carpool
We will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas
Station across from Marriott Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just
west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 2:15 PM. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to
form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic representatives.
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool
We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy (formerly SavOn Drugs) -
12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud).
There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's.
There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as
ZPizza, Togo's, Islands, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet in
the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy at 1:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE: Be
prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic
representatives.
