Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles and Nexus as they bring you yet another joint venture: a 7 mi hike loop thru Peter's Canyon Regional Park followed by an optional Lunch at a neighborhood Restaurant. Let’s take advantage of the fresh air and blooming flowers, while at the same time getting some exercise. The hike is not too easy, not too hard, just right! The trail starts off on flat terrain, for about 1 mi around the Reservoir and then it goes up and down (yes, there are some moderate hills) for about 3 mi & then it levels off on the way back. Well conditioned beginners are welcome, but please no whining (until we're finished :). Spread the word to all your Jewish friends... the more the merrier! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles and Nexus as they bring you yet another joint venture: a 7 mi hike loop thru Peter's Canyon Regional Park followed by an optional Lunch at a neighborhood Restaurant. HIKE START TIME: Meet in the Parking lot, by the Port-a-Potty at 9:45 A.M.; leave at 10:00 AM. SHARP!!

BRING: Water (two liters recommended), hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a snack to share,
and money for parking and food afterwards. It might get cool, so bring a sweater or

PARKING INFORMATION: There is parking on the grounds – there is a $5 fee and you MUST HAVE EXACT CHANGE, or you could try to park for free on the neighborhood streets, but pay attention to the “No Parking Signs”.
RAIN 48 HOURS BEFORE THE HIKE OR ON THE DAY OF THE HIKE WILL CANCEL THE EVENT (they close off the park), BUT CLOUDS WILL NOT.

Take CA-22 East toward ORANGE (if coming on I-5) or toward GARDEN GROVE(if coming on I-405), to CA-55 North via the exit on the LEFT toward RIVERSIDE. Take the CHAPMAN AVE. EAST exit.; turn RIGHT onto JAMBOREE RD.; turn RIGHT onto CANYON VIEW AVE. Park Entrance is on your left hand side or you can try to park for free in the residential area on your right hand side.
From West LA Carpool point to CA-22:
Take I-10 East to I-5 South toward SANTA ANA, to CA-22 East toward ORANGE, and follow the directions above.
From the Valley Carpool point to CA-22:

West LA Carpool -- we will meet at Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 8:30 AM. We leave at 8:45 AM SHARP. We will meet at the trailhead at 9:45 am (see directions below). According to Mapquest it’s 48 miles and it’ll take 53 minutes. PLEASE NOTE: there may be no Mosaic or Nexus people at this carpool point, so form your own carpools.
Valley Carpool -- we will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas Station across from Marriot Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 8:30 AM and leave at 8:45 AM SHARP. We will meet at the trailhead at 9:45 am (see directions below). According to Mapquest it’s 61 miles and it’ll take 1 hour and 2 minutes. PLEASE NOTE: there may be no Mosaic or Nexus people at this carpool point, so form your own carpools.
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool -- we will meet BEHIND SavOn Drugs - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the SavOn and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Island's, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet at 9:00 AM and leave at 9:15 AM SHARP. We will meet at the trailhead at 9:45 am (see directions below). According to Yahoo! Maps, it’s 20.6 miles and it’ll take 28 minutes. PLEASE NOTE: there may be no Mosaic or Nexus people at this carpool point, so form your own carpools.

Full Moon Hike to Nike Missile Tower (and Havdalah at the top), Saturday, May 2, 2009
Please join us on our first full moon hike of 2009! Jeff Zimerman will lead this moderate 7 mile round trip hike on fire roads to an old Nike Missile Site (with running water and flush toilets). On a clear day, the site has beautiful views of LA from the ocean to downtown to the valleys. There is approximately 900 ft of elevation gain in a gentle uphill climb on well-maintained fire roads. At the halfway point, at the top, we will break to share our snacks and to have a brief Havdalah service; then, we'll head back down. Optional coffee/snacks/dessert at a local shop afterward. Please note: Restrooms and water are at the halfway point, but not at the trailhead.

Hike to Bagel in Newport Beach, Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles and Nexus for an "urban" hike, in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. Upper Newport Bay is an estuary - a place where fresh and salt water meet and mix. It is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California and is the home of nearly 200 species of birds, including several endangered species, as well as numerous species of mammals, fish, other critters and native plants. The varied habitats include open waters, salt marshes, mud flats, dunes, sandy beaches, bluffs, riparian woodlands, and ponds.
There are no Restrooms at the trail head but there are port-o-johns about 3/4 of mile in.
This is an easy but fast paced 7 miles round trip “urban” hike on fairly level (100-200 ft. +/-), paved ground; this hike is suitable for energetic, fit beginners!

We will hike 3.5 miles to Shirley's Bagels for a late Breakfast/early lunch and after we get re-energized we'll walk back along the same path. For those with extra energy, we can add more miles to it on the way back :)

Santa Monica Evening Shoreline Walk to Pier (and Havdalah at the Beach) -- Saturday, May 9, 2009
Easy, social walk (4-mile round trip) along Ocean Ave in Santa Monica to the beach, watching the sunset as we walk and talk. Our route takes us along the scenic walking path, over the bridge to the sandy beach. As we cross the sand and approach the water, we will have a brief Havdalah service with spice box and candles, maybe a little ceremonial wine. Then, we can continue on to the Pier where we can reconvene for dinner, people watching, and keeping the late-night fishermen company. There is lots to do on the 3rd Street Promenade afterwards. All ages welcome. You may leave at any point when you want...just let us know.

Please join us for this VERY special and unique event and as we celebrate the Jewish and Latino Cultures on Isael's 61st Independence Anniversary. You will have the opportunity to visit the oldest surviving Jewish Shul as well as enjoy the street fair, sample the food at the food booths and enjoy live performances by Quetzal and Mariachi. Fiesta Shalom is a street fair and festival celebrating a tri-cultural connection with live performances of music and dance. Picnic and Sunset Hike on the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula, Sunday, May 24th, 2009
Please join us for a leisurely paced, moderate/easy 3+ miles round trip hike along some of the more beautiful PV peninsula Bluffs and the beach down below. Along the way we'll enjoy picturesque views of Bluff Cove, the rocky coast line and the bluffs of the PV peninsula. Sail boats, kayaks and surfers often dot the water and the Santa Monica Mountains along the north side of Santa Monica Bay offer a panoramic view. Artists love to paint this area. Lots of Photo Ops. We will be there on an incoming tide. With this in mind, we may be able to walk along the base of the bluffs. Those with water shoes can take delightful water walk along the coastline. Marine life here is varied with flocks of pelicans, other sea birds, occasional dolphins and there are interesting tide pools that can be viewed. This is a moderately narrow rocky beach. If the incoming tide presents a problem we will walk to another beach nearby for dinner and the sunset (which is at 7:55 PM); bring a picnic supper and some appetizer or desert to share. After we enjoy our picnic, we'll start back towards our cars; most strenuous part is the climb up the hill back to the road. PLEASE NOTE: Portable Restrooms are at the park, where we start the hike. No facilities on the beach.

Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for this 6.5 mile hike through Santa Anita Canyon in the Angeles National Forest. This is a moderate to easy hike with an estimated elevation change of 800 ft. We'll follow a path downhill into the canyon and hike alongside Big Santa Anita Creek, seeing Sturtevant Falls on the way. In several areas, there are stream crossings over rocks, easily done by most beginning hikers. Water fountains and vaulted toilets are at the trailhead. Optional dinner at local eatery after the hike. This event is for adults only, 21+. Please note inclement weather policy below in case of excessive heat or rain. Also, long pants are recommended as stream areas may have poison oak.

Full Moon Hike in Pacific Palisades and Havdalah under the Stars, Saturday, June 13th, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
Come join MOSAIC Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for another full moon hike in the Santa Monica Mountains above Pacific Palisades. Jeff Zimerman will lead a 4 mile round trip, 400 foot elevation gain hike. The trail is mostly on a nearly flat wide fire road with the only hard climbs at the beginning. We'll have spectacular views of Santa Monica and the ocean draped in gold at Sunset. At the halfway point, we will break to share our snacks and to have a brief Havdalah service; then, we'll head back down. You should be in moderate hiking shape for this hike. The hike is on the Temescal Ridge Trail.

From Santa Monica: the #10 Fwy WEST until it ends on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Follow PCH North until you get to Sunset Blvd. 4.0 miles. Sharp right at W Sunset Blvd 0.5 mi. Turn left at Palisades Dr 3.5 mi.(strip mal on the corner). Palisades Drive turns into Chastain Pkwy. Continue on Chastain Pkwy E 0.4 mi. Turn right at Via Las Palmas 463 ft.and park at the top of the trailhead or on Chastain Pkwy. Turn right at Via La Costa 102 ft. Full Moon Hike in Pacific Palisades and Havdalah under the Stars, Saturday, June 13th, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
Come join MOSAIC Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles for another full moon hike in the Santa Monica Mountains above Pacific Palisades. Jeff Zimerman will lead a 4 mile round trip, 400 foot elevation gain hike. The trail is mostly on a nearly flat wide fire road with the only hard climbs at the beginning. We'll have spectacular views of Santa Monica and the ocean draped in gold at Sunset. At the halfway point, we will break to share our snacks and to have a brief Havdalah service; then, we'll head back down. You should be in moderate hiking shape for this hike. The hike is on the Temescal Ridge Trail.
IMPORTANT: All MOSAIC events require participants to sign a Liability Release Waiver at the event location. If you would like to read the waiver before the event, you can do so at http://www.mosaicla.org/signin.pdf. Please email the event leader if you have any questions about this.
DIRECTIONS TO TRAIL HEAD:
From Santa Monica: the #10 Fwy WEST until it ends on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Follow PCH North until you get to Sunset Blvd. 4.0 miles. Sharp right at W Sunset Blvd 0.5 mi. Turn left at Palisades Dr 3.5 mi.(strip mal on the corner). Palisades Drive turns into Chastain Pkwy. Continue on Chastain Pkwy E 0.4 mi. Turn right at Via Las Palmas 463 ft.and park at the top of the trailhead or on Chastain Pkwy. Turn right at Via La Costa 102 ft. There is a big brown sign for the Temescal Ridge Trailhead.IMPORTANT: All MOSAIC events require participants to sign a Liability Release Waiver at the event location. HIKE END TIME: We should be back to the trailhead about 9:30 P.M.
BRING: Water (at least one liter), hat, a snack to share, and a jacket, sweater or windbreaker,
as it may get cool, and/or windy, and a flashlight (for emergencies only).
FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or trail running shoes recommended, ABSOLUTELY NO sandals or other
open-toe shoes, flip flops, casual shoes or high heels.

PARKING INFORMATION: There is plenty of free street parking.
From the San Fernando Valley: Take 405 Fwy South to Sunset Blvd west. Head west to Palisades Drive and turn right. (Palisades Drive is 1 mile east of PCH) and follow the directions above.
CARPOOL POINTS: There is no carpool point, but there is plenty of parking. We will meet the trailhead.

Three Parks Ramble and Korean Friendship Bell in San Pedro, Sunday, June 28th, 2009
BRING: 1 liter of water, an extra jacket, camera and money for dinner.
Come with Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angles on a walking exploration of 3 parks at the southernmost tip of San Pedro: Cabrillo Beach, Point Fermin, and finally, Angel's Gate Park, where we will stop to view the Korean Bell of Friendship. This walk boasts beautiful scenery and ocean vistas and will leave you wondering if you are really in San Pedro! Total distance is approximately 4.5 miles, with some rolling hills, suitable for energetic beginners. Estimated elevation change is 250 feet. It is mostly paved, except for a few sections of grass and packed dirt. Midway, at the Korean Friendship Bell, we'll stop for a break and a tour of the bell and its pagoda, which are truly works of art. There are several bathrooms are en route.There will be an optional gathering for dinner at a local eatery after the walk.

START TIME: Meet at the flags/water fountain area at 2:45 P.M. (directions beIow); leave at 3:00 PM

END TIME: Approximately 4:30 PM for the hike

DIRECTIONS:
- Harbor Freeway 110 South into San Pedro.
- Exit for Harbor Blvd. (Follow signs very carefully for Harbor Blvd or else you will end up on the bridge to Long Beach! If you do, just turn around when you are able, and follow signs for Harbor Blvd.)
- At end of exit ramp, go RIGHT onto Harbor Blvd.
- Proceed on Harbor Blvd 1.5 miles to 22nd Street (Harbor Blvd changes names to Miner St.)
- Turn RIGHT on 22nd Street. Go 0.4 miles.
- Turn LEFT onto Via Cabrillo Marina. Go 0.6 miles, passing Doubletree Hotel, then:
- Follow signs for Cabrillo Plaza--Park in the parking lot on the right for CABRILLO PLAZA, and meet us by the flags/fountain.

Follow above directions to get to the meeting point.

West LA Carpool
We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 1:45 P.M.; leave at 2:00 P.M sharp!! According to Google Maps, it will take 40 minutes without traffic. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic representatives.
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool
We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy (formerly SavOn Drugs) - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Island's, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy at 1:45 P.M.; leave at 2:00 P.M sharp!! According to Google Maps, it will take about 40 minutes without traffic.
