Mortality Forum: 2021-03-01 Q1 – Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period (P00-P96)_Update 1
Comment from Sue Walker, Australia
Hi Mmamokete – it’s great to be getting some discussions from South Africa!
Codes from chapter XVI (‘P codes’) can be used for decedents of any age, so long as the condition being coded began in the perinatal period – if you look right at the start of the chapter, there is a relevant inclusion note that states ‘Incl.: conditions that have their origin in the perinatal period even though death or morbidity occurs later’.
Stillbirth NOS and fetal death of unspecified cause is coded to P95.
Neonatal diarrhoea that is NOS or infectious is coded to A09.0 but non infective diarrhoea is coded to P78.3. See the inclusion and exclusion notes at each of these codes:
A09.9 Gastroenteritis and colitis of unspecified origin
Neonatal diarrhoea NOS
P78.3 Noninfective neonatal diarrhoea
Excl.:
neonatal diarrhoea:
NOS (A09.9)
infectious (A09.0)
Regards,
Sue
Comment from Patricia Wood, Canada
Dear Mmamokete,
As Sue says, it’s wonderful to hear from you! I will only add to Sue’s response that ICD-10 code P783 Noninfective neonatal diarrhea was updated a number of times by the WHO-FIC Network Update and Revision Committee (URC), so the current content, as detailed by Sue, is not apparent in print versions of ICD-10.
Details of official WHO updates to ICD-10 can be found at: https://www.who.int/standards/classifications/classification-of-diseases/list-of-official-icd-10-updates
A fully updated 2019 version of ICD-10 can be found at:
https://icd.who.int/browse10/2019/en#/
All the best,
Patricia
