Hello,
I'm Zina Hebbache, head of the medical causes of death coding team at CépiDc in France. I'm starting to write a PhD on the quality of medical causes of death (certification, coding and a section on the transition to ICD-10/CIM-11).
I am looking for scientific articles on the subject of the quality of causes of death. If you have any ideas or have written an article yourself, please don't hesitate to contact me (zina.h...@inserm.fr).

Thank you for your help,

Zina

Response from Dr. Patricia Nilda

Dear Zina,

I recommend the following articles:

Counting the dead and what they died from: an assessment of the global status of cause of death data - PubMed (nih.gov)

A composite metric for assessing data on mortality and causes of death: the vital statistics performance index | Population Health Metrics | Full Text (biomedcentral.com)

Redistribution of garbage codes to underlying causes of death: a systematic analysis on Italy and a comparison with most populous Western European countries based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 OP-EURP210192 456..462 (nih.gov)

And I also suggest checking ANACoD3 (Analysing Mortality and Causes of Death 3) online tool, which helps you to perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of mortality and cause-of-death data.

ANACoD | Analysing Mortality and Cause of Death (version 3) (azureedge.net).

In fact, you can choose France as a sample data set and the tool will evaluate the quality of data as well. In particularly Step 1.5 Check: Deaths coded to invalid ICD codes, by sex and age group, Step 1.6 Check: ICD codes inconsistent with age and sex, Step 1.7 Check: ICD codes not to be used for underlying cause of death, Step 3.1 Completeness of death data and Step 10 Quality of cause of death data. The tool is user-friendly and if you have your own mortality data set you can also upload it.

With kind regards

Patricia Nilda

Response from Dr. Torres

Dear Zina Hebbache

I sent to your email address six articles on quality of information, certification and effects of ICD changes on mortality statistics in our country.

They are several years old and collect some experience from our work on the topic, and particularly with maternal mortality, in Mexico within our Collaborating Center for the WHO International Classifications Family.

They are in Spanish, but if you are interested, I think the translation is easier now.

I hope they are useful for your project.

Best wishes
