So I've been a Start 10 users since Windows 10 was released and love it... on Windows 10. I recently built a Windows 11 machine and discovered that there are things Start 11 can't do that remain annoying. I did find another tool, "Explorer Patcheer" that solved several of these, but there are issues with explorer patcher, and with combining it with Start 11.

Also, when running ExplorerPatcher, it leaves a window in the system tray. If I try to close that window, it resets explorer. Not very clean. And I can't find a way to hide that window when running ExplorerPatcher...

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I will not recommend to use any application that could cause conflict with Start11. ExplorerPatcher is one of them. However, I understand your need to be as close as possible with previous Windows version environment. With that said, hopefully someone that share your setup would come in and share some tips on it.

With every change in Windows, EP seems to break. Seems to me to be more work than it's worth especially when you consider that 24H2 comes with a lockout for more (non Stardock) customizing software: -11-24h2-blanket-bans-some-desktop-customization-apps-in-test-builds-and-a-lot-of-folks-arent-happy

Even in the early days of using EP, I believe I heard the developer stating that his solution was not the best one long term. Even he seemed to advocate that the best solution was to build an actual taskbar and EP always was meant to be kind of a bridge until that happened. Knowing that I put in a lot of requests with stardock on how I wanted things built and a lot of those requests did in fact get implemented. Unfortunately, building things from the ground up is a much longer process so things can take time and this is why EP was so valuable. Probably now that Microsoft is making things more difficult, the developer of EP felt it was the right time to close that bridge. I believe that programs like startallback, which may be compatible with start 11, are still trying to keep their program working for 24h2. But again, that could only be considered a bridge. Things that you will always want to have on Windows 11 should be requested to the start 11 dev team as they do listen to requests.

My laptop is quite small, and I have many applications open. I do not want to waste space on the taskbar for a thing that I could reach with Win+A.
I tried rigth-clicking on it, but nothing happned.

It is true that in W/11 22H2 there is no "Action Center" or "Control Center" to deselect in the "Other system tray icons" in Settings > Personalisation > Taskbar, and while I had Explorer Patcher installed and I did the registry hack that harrymc helpfully provided in his updated answer below, and restarted explorer.exe, yet the (basically useless to me) Control Center icon still showed up.

However, I did find an option in the Explorer Patcher settings (Properties) in the System Tray fly out that enables the Control Center icon to be deselected (via turning the check to a X). Yet I found that this CC icon still came back, so I am adding this edit.

Under Properties on the Taskbar with the latest Explorer Patcher installed and running, click on Taskbar (top left) and then "Customize system icons in the notifications area" and choose Off next to Action Center.

I later found that Explorer Patcher lists this option on its All Feature page under "Hide Control Center button," and thus the registry hack is likely not necessary, but someone else will need to conform this.

So install ExplorerPatcher then right click on the Task bar where you can obtain the Properties option, and click on that and choose Properties and then System Tray and then hit the check next to the Control Center button so that it turns into a check mark, then click on "Customize system icons in the notifications area" and choose Off next to Action Center. You may need go to in the bottom left corner and click on Restart File Explorer.

This issue is certainly not a major one, but I customize for space and efficiency (+ appearance) and I think we should be able to, and this icon was wasting space. And so I took (too much) time trying all the proffered past solutions that I found, and also deselected a couple entries via AutoRuns, but none worked. But I thank God for those who provide such helpful software as ExplorerPatcher (among so many others).

On reboot, the pre-login screen reports failed patches and attempts recovery. When I log in, the explorer.exe files are missing and I only have a windowed command prompt. Server services appear to be working (SQL, etc). It's acting like it turned itself into Server Core.

Warning If your GUI shell is listed as being installed (i.e. you're not running "core"), you might get the shell back by uninstalling it and then reinstallling it but chances are other parts of the system are toast. A much wiser choice at this point it to reinstall and restore a backup.

ExplorerPatcher is an open source program for Windows 10 and 11 that adds a huge number of customization options to the desktop environment. From restoring the classic Windows 10 taskbar on Windows 11 devices to adding or removing features that Microsoft does not want users to have access to.

The application is tiny and can be run right after download. Note that the screen may turn a solid color for a moment before the changes that it makes take effect. There may also be a Windows SmartScreen warning about the app.

Warning: Explorer Patcher seems to be glitchy with recent versions of Windows 11. The system boots to a black screen, making it unusable. We are no longer recommending this tool, as it prevents Explorer from running.

Windows 11 users will notice taskbar changes right away, as the Windows 10 taskbar style is loaded by default by the application. All of this can be customized by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting properties from the menu.

Speaking of which, the context menu displays "lost" options again, including the ability to show windows side-by-side or stacked. There is also the Task Manager link, which Microsoft removed initially but has restored lately again on Windows 11.

Each section lists a number of tweaks and changes that users may make to customize the Windows desktop environment. Taskbar alone holds several important options. There, users may switch between Windows 10 and 11 taskbar styles. Depending on that selection, other options become available.

Windows 10 is the default, and it allows users to add or remove items, change the Start button style and taskbar alignment, and move the taskbar from the bottom location to the top or the sides of the screen. There are also options to change the huge icon size to small and define whether icons should be combined or not. The Windows 11 taskbar style has less options, e.g., the ability to place it at the sides or top is not available.

The program's other settings are equally extensive. System Tray, for instance, lists a good dozen options that define behavior; this depends on the selected taskbar style, with Windows 10's taskbar style offering more options than Windows 11's.

For Windows 10, users may show or remove options. There is an option to show seconds on the clock, something on which Microsoft is still working on getting restored on Windows 11. Other options include defining actions when clicking on system tray icons or hiding the show desktop button.

The File Explorer sections offers a similar set of customization options. The default set of changes skips the new Windows 11 context menu by default to display the classic one automatically. Other options include enabling legacy file transfer dialogs, shrinking the address bar height, or disabling the modern search bar.

Users who explorer the other sections find the option to place a weather widget on the taskbar; this widget is not related to the Windows 11 Widgets feature, but a relict of Windows 10, which Microsoft never rolled out fully. It may be enabled to display weather information on the taskbar. A custom location and styale may be selected for it.
