Remix as Redemption in

DJ Spooky's Rebirth of a Nation”
John McAteer, Ph.D.

Why would an African-American hip hop musician host a public showing of a racist movie such as DW Griffith's KKK propaganda film Birth of a Nation?   In this multimedia lecture, Dr. John McAteer will argue that the peculiar ontology and authorship of hip hop remixes and mashups allows artists such as DJ Spooky to creatively appropriate immoral artworks in order to both undermine their ideological power and also to transform their moral value.  If this is correct, then artistic recontextualization could function as a moral argument.
