What: Indigenous and anti-colonial perspectives on resisting Borders and confronting NGO bullshit -- a potluck, panel and hip hop performance.
Where: At the Rogers Park liberated house, 7245 N Ridge, Chicago, IL
When: Sunday, July 6th from 5:00-10:00pm.
Who: Moratorium on Deportations, Communities United Against Eviction and
Foreclosure, Gender JUST, and our special guests from Pheonix, AZ and the
O’Tohono O'odham Nation at the US/Mexico border.
Description: Recently, national immigrant rights organizations have used
the U.S./Mexico border as a backdrop for staging media spectacles
promoting Comprehensive Immigration Reform. But what is really at stake in
the use of this imagery?
Shining Soul (Alex Soto + Franco Habre) and Nellie Jo David will share
insights on how these campaigns function to erase the lived realities of
indigenous people whose lands are severed by the border and likewise
undermine the potential of building anti-colonial solidarities between
indigenous and migrant justice communities. Join us in a conversation
about how NGO's and the "white ally" complex help justify the
militarization of indigenous lands and play into the hands of capitalist
development projects and neoliberal "free trade" corridors. How can these
insights challenge us in Chicago to build resistance to borders and
detention from an anti-colonial perspective?

**Shining Soul, straight outta the desert borough, Arizona's premier Hip
Hop duo, MCs Liaizon (Alex Soto) and MC Bronze Candidate (Franco Habre),
show us that rap is still a conduit for revolutionary change.
**Alex Soto of Central Phoenix/Tohono O'odham Nation, is an artist,
organizer and member of the O'odham Solidarity Across Borders Collective
and Tohono O'odham Hemajkam Rights Network (TOHRN); Alex will talk about
O'odham perspectives on border militarization, confronting the "white
ally" complex and the ongoing struggle to resist the colonization of
native lands though trade corridors.
** Franco Habre is a Chicano artist from South Phoenix and recently
co-wrote "Comprehensive Immigration Reform is Anti-Immigrant &
Anti-Indigenous". Franco will share insights on the necessity of building
brown-red solidarity.
** Nellie Jo David, a Tohono O'odham law student specializing in
indigenous law and policy, and writer of the blog Circular Motion. Her
passion against border militarization, border patrol, and the
prison/military industrial complex comes from growing up near the United
States/Mexico border and bearing witness to rampant abuses of power during
her lifetime
