IE9 is really tough. I've tried all sorts of things and I can't stop the problem you describe. After refresh, it loads correctly, but at first, the thumbnails sometimes don't load, or all bunch up on top of each other. One thing to do is to make sure all the css is filled out that positions the thumbnails. In the tests I did on different laptops at Best Buy, that helped in some situations, but not always. Oddly, it did seem that once it did load correctly, other slide shows would load correctly too, like IE9 needed to figure it out once.
The slideshow work flawlessly in in every browser I've tried except for IE9.
One thing I'd like to see is optimization for touch events like on an iPad or Android tablet too...
