Hi,

I was at the MOOSE presentation yesterday at MIT by Derek Gaston and I tried to install it on my laptop.

First steps were ok  :

| => module list
Currently Loaded Modulefiles:

1) moose/.cppunit-gcc                 3) moose/.cppunit-clang               5) moose/.openmpi-1.8.1_clang         7) moose-dev-clang                    9) moose-tools

2) moose/.gcc_4.9.1                   4) moose/.clang                       6) moose/.openmpi_petsc-3.5.1-clang   8) moose/.vtk5

Then, I try to compile libmesh and I got the follwoing output :

Making install in gmv

make[3]: Nothing to be done for `

I never got that type of output before.
Do you know what can be the cause of that error ?

Thanks in advance.

Thomas,

Glad you're trying it out - sorry you've run into an issue here.

What version of OSX are you using

Some quick googling shows that you're not the only one seeing this:

But it's never been reported to us before.

In Terminal if you go into Preferences->Profiles->(Whatever profile you use)->Advanced do you have "Set locale environment variables on startup" selected?  If so... do you have UTF-8 selected for "Text encoding" is "Unicode East Asian Ambiguous characters are wide" set?

(You may just want to take a screenshot of that "Advanced" tab and send it in so we can see what you've got.

If we can't work this out then let's meet up on campus and I'll help you get things going!

Derek

Thomas,

Again, we haven't seen this error before, but I can confirm that by default the "Set locale environment variables on startup" box should be checked. Did you remove that check for a specific reason? If not, could you check that box, restart your terminal and see if that resolves your issue?

Cody,

Thanks for answering quickly.

First, Derek asked which version of Mas OS I have, it is Yosemite 10.10.1

Yes, I removed that check a month ago to install something be cause I had the same issue ("broken locales", I solved it by changing compiler from clang to gcc), and I forgot to check it again.

I checked it and restarted the computer and it's still not working. Same output as before.

I think it is not linked to the Moose framework, something related to clang might be corrupted or broken.

We have other developers on 10.10.1, so we know that it works. I haven't updated to the latest version yet, but I'll give that a shot and verify it works here in a bit.

You are also welcome to try GCC with MOOSE. Our package contains both compilers so if you want to switch, that's an option too.  Just add these two lines to your .bash_profile:

module purge
module load moose-dev-gcc

Restart your terminal (no need to reboot the system) and try once more.

Thomas,

Did you ever get this working?  I'm on campus today and have time to stop by and help if you would like.  Just let me know!

Thomas,
I had the same problem.
Macos: 10.15.2
Xcode: 11.3.1

I wonder if there is something wrong with xcode. If so, can reinstall xcode solve the problem?

Thomas,
After my unremitting efforts, I finally found the reason, I think our problem should be the same.
A problem with the system environment variable Settings.
```
# export CPATH=":/usr/local/include"
# export C_INCLUDE_PATH=$CPATH
# export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=$PATH
# export PATH="/Applications/Visual Studio Code.app/Contents/Resources/app/bin:$PATH"
```
After I comment out the above statement, I can use the make system normally.

android studio example and protobuf project make recover normal.
