Totally agree with any sentiment along the lines of - if you want to do active listening with transcripts - then a medium without visuals (such as: books, native podcasts, chat radio) are better options for learning.
How best to use it - is up to you and your level. From video in your target with your native subtitles, to audio only with no pictures. Between those two you have subtitled in a third language, in the target language matching perfectly the audio or not - and video with no subtitles. Reading the subtitles with no video is also interesting.
So, after I had read enough Spanish episodes to understand the words being used, I realized the subtitles were a crutch and I needed to remove them. So, I practiced my listening by moving the subtitles back to my native English. This forced me to listen, not read.
I agree about becoming a fluent speaker before being able to understand stuff. I can speak Spanish quite well, and when I read the subtitles, I understand everything. It is just the spoken medium that is so difficult to understand. I have ever read literature in Spanish and when I watch normal Youtube videos I have no problem even at high velocity, but movies and TV shows are just unconquerable so far. At least some of them. It also depends a lot on the dialect. I mean, Spanish is varied as hell.
Just get comprehensible input and watch that instead. The benefits are that you can find more material you can use without having to get subs for it and you will be enjoying the content as intended for natives.
I hate audiobooks. Because when i read i like to go slowly and take everything in, even in English. I like to use my imagination and imagine the scene. The tastes. The smells. This using of senses is both harder with audiobooks and yet insanely productive for remembering things in the TL because the more senses we invoke the more we remember.
But with TV, I just wanna sit back on my couch and watch a show while getting additional language exposure Again, with the hope of turning off the subs sooner rather than later and native subs seem to facilitate this a lot faster. In my experience, this is a better use of this medium to benefit my goal of maximizing listening comprehension.
Finally, there was a cultural element to it. I was taking an exam that would have culture, and I think it was absolutely useful to watch a Mexican show about soccer, Mexican telenovelas about the old wealthy of society, Spanish shows about Madrid in the 1920s and 1950s, Cuban television about Celia Cruz, a Chilean movie about Pablo Neruda. So much culture is shown through the television.
Since this post and I think since I had around 150ish hours of listening I have turned off subtitles and now am watching some of my favourite anime in Spanish and listening to the lessons from the Lingq Library what I noticed when turning of subtitles was that my brain had to really concentrate on just the audio and I also was able to enjoy the anime because I was not focusing on just the subtitles to understand what is going on I have finished 2 anime series and plan on finishing more. I do feel like my listening has improved but I have not really tested myself on that just yet perhaps when I reach 300 hours then I will try and contact a native speaker and see really how much I can understand just from watching anime and listening to podcasts etc when in the gym.

You and stiles had been friends for a while. Whenever you would have a pack meeting you would meet up after and watch movies all night. Tonight was the same. You had decided to watch movies at his house as his dad was at work late. You stopped off to get some snacks on the way. You were in charge of drinks and he was in charge of food. When you were inside the store you both went your separate ways, you found the drinks aisle grabbing two massive bottles of fizzy drinks. You both agreed to meet outside at the car, so after you paid you headed out, expecting stiles to already be there. But he wasn't, and when he came out you could see why.... He was carrying 6 bags of food in one hand and a pile of DVDs in the other."Stiles, what is all this?" You asked, reaching for some of the bags, placing them in his car."Snacks. I brought some snacks.....oh and some DVDs, they were cheap and we haven't watched them so...yeah" he replied as he tried to shove the bags inside without crushing the food. You nodded, accepting the fact that he was crazy, but you still cared about him deeply. You knew you're feelings wouldn't amount to anything but a small part of you hoped they did. You didn't realise you were daydreaming until you felt the engine stop."Earth to y/n, we're here. You're going to have to help me in with the bags. They're kind of heavy. Not that I can't lift them because I can." You could hear his heart beat steadily next to you as you lay your head on his chest. He traced circles on your upper arm. Honestly you weren't focused on the movie anymore.

I had no idea you felt the same way! I mean, I thought you only saw me as a friend...." You stopped rambling when you saw him lean in. You could feel his breath against your lips, his hovering millimetres away. If you just leant forward a bit, you would kiss him. But then he started laughing..."Do you really think I'd fall for you y/n, seriously? Your my friend, nothing more." He said harshly " and you never will be anything more." His words hurt, you fought back tears. This is what you were always afraid of. Rejection.
We, Italian people, have the culture of dubbing and translating every media and we rarely watch movies or read books in english. Here translations are systematic, with a tradition going back to the 1930s, where in Mussolini's fascist Italy release of foreign languages movies was banned for political reasons.
That led Italy to have by far the biggest dub industry in the world with something like 1,200 dubbers; and nowadays the unmatched quality of lip-sync and interpretation causes even Italian movies to be dubbed again with other voice actors. So for us translations are part of our culture.
For TWD2 and TWAU fans succeeded to create some unofficial italian subtitles, just for appreciation toward the games.
Even for TFTB they tried too, but it's a too big task to do it just for free during the spare time.
So newer titles such Michonne or Minecraft will not have fan subtitles support... and the games are even getting lower review scores for lacking Italian language.
Just want to bump this thread to make the Telltale staff to notice that the Steam Store page for Tales from the Borderlands still doesn't show the new supported languages that were inserted in the latest patch.
It's all very well being awarded 10 badges and 52 likes for my discussion on Sky's totally unacceptable subtitles which have caused widespread dissatisfaction for years. But Sky have done absolutely nothing to correct this urgent requirement to address the issue. I'm stone deaf in one ear and have severely impaired hearing in my good ear. I am totally dependent on subtitles. A vast mumber of Sky Community have been complaining about the ridiculous large size of the subs, their intrusive position on the TV screen and the solid black background box which adds to the insult especially when they obliterate the faces of zoomed in presenters of news programmes etc. Just look at Papers on BBC as an example of this infuriating issue. The subtitles in their present form are also a major contributory factor of of burn-in on OLED screens.
I implore you once again to take some positive action to rectify this everlasting problem.
Hi @kennyrb and @ijkijk and thanks for the feedback. Changes to subtitles is not on a firm roadmap as yet, but is certainly something we would like to look at. Can you let me know more about what you would like and expect to see? Are you currently on Sky Q or sky+?
