Hi!

Sharing my bad luck and asking for some advices here. :/

The wheel from my Mooltipass Mini broke (got loose, turning it does nothing anymore). I managed to take it out of the case, and now I'm looking at how to input my pin anyway (my last backup is one month old).

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how the wheel hardware works. I see a small metal knob that I can push to validate/cancel, but I can't manage to make it rotate to select stuff. Should I persevere, or does it work differently? And does anyone have an idea about what tools I could use?

Oh, and be careful: this wheel is pretty fragile. That's actually the second unit I see failing that way. The first was new, broken in the package. This one broke while in my pocket. :/

Hello there,

We're very sorry to hear... it seems you're really not lucky :/
Did that happen following a fall or?
The trick that seems to have worked for us was to put the wheel back in place, use some pointy object to lift the PCB board "up" in order to mechanically constrain the wheel with the aluminum frame.
You'll then be able to enter your pin & make a backup of your DB.

Regards,
Mathieu

I have to say im not very happy with the wheel either. Mine has never left my desk and never been the subject of abuse and the wheel gets stuck in and generally doesnt feel like its going to last very long.

Hey Jess,

What do you mean by "stuck in"?

I broke the wheel while trying to put it back in place, but I managed to log in anyway. It's actually easy enough once you figured out how the parts move. So, just in case someone has the same issue, I included a very clear and comprehensive schematic. :]

Basically, you can push on the metal knob (in grey) to validate and cancel, but for the rotation you can turn the black plastic disk directly underneath (in black). Use a thin knife or a pin (pun not intended).

Now that I have my backup, I'm wondering if I could repair it with some glue...

Also, does the backup work with a standard mooltipass ? I gave my other minis away. :/

You may indeed import your backup on your original mooltipass!

Send me your address in private and i'll have a new unit shipped to you.

When you push the wheel in to select something it gets stuck in the pushed in position.

Mathieu,

Mine has broken too and I'd like to offer my findings so you might be able to use this to improve the product in the future.  The wheel on mine appeared "stuck in" as well but also appeared to be lifted from its normal resting position.  Upon opening the case, the jog wheel fell completely out.  I was able to see that the wheel may have been molded in two pieces and then later bonded: an outer piece that the user touches, and an inner piece that interacts with the encoder.  It appears the two parts have separated.  I'm attaching an image to show what I mean.  If you would like more pictures or a better explanation, please let me know.  The device is otherwise still functional and I have ordered another and am using my Mooltipass V1 until it gets here.  I hope this is helpful.  Cheers!

Hello Jesse,

Thanks a lot for sharing your findings!
This wheel sure is giving us some headaches.
You didn't need to buy a new device m, we can either reimburse you or send you anther one!

You're welcome, I'm glad to help!  I bought a second device because you have a solid product and I use it everyday. The difficulty in manufacturing and sourcing quality parts inventing something new in general comes with its unique challenges and headaches.  You had no idea that wheel would be difficult and I'm not put off by it.  It'll all work itself out evolutionarily as you learn and grow.  However if you wanted to send me another still, I certainly wouldn't turn it down.  Let me know if you need anything from me to facilitate that.
