We should all get together sometime this month to talk about our next
jam session. Is everyone available for lunch on the 18th?

...turns out that I'm busy on the 18th as well...

How about weeknights?  Is there a weeknight that works best for everyone?

What about 4/20?

4/20 works for me.  How about you Evan?

4/20 is the XNA User's Group meeting...  As is the 27th.

How about the 22nd? :-)  It's a Wednesday, we can all meet in the evening.

You want to do a session on a weekday? I can't do that with my job, unfortunately.

Sorry, I'm not talking about doing a jam session on a weekday.  Jam sessions are weekend events.  My job won't allow that sort of thing either.

I was thinking that we would just meet to talk about our next jam session.  Discuss what we might do, what direction we want to go, when to hold the actual session.

So, meeting number 2 of the Moogle Lodge is scheduled for May 23rd at Rick Spencer's house, pending his wife's approval.  We're going to meet from 10am Saturday until 10am Sunday.

Joining us last night were Mike and Guy, who will bring our population to 9 once they officially join the group.  We discussed a couple of different ideas for games we might try to make, and the general consensus seemed to be the construction of a card game, or more appropriately a card game engine.

Be thinking of what kind of card games you would like to bring to life.  The goal is to make multi-player card games.  Share your card-game ideas here.

Given the large number of people who will potentially be at the next session, I'm thinking that we can split into 3 groups.  One team to work on the core engine, and refine that through the session, and 2 teams to each split off and work on a separate card game to plug into the engine.

Also, everyone should take a look at this game sometime in the next month: http://www.worldofmunchkin.com/game/  Munchkin is an RPG-style card game.  Some cards give you items, classes, races.  Other cards throw monsters at you that you fight with the cards in your hand.  It's all kinds of fun. :-)

Is the general idea that we will create an RPG or battle type of card game similar to Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, Munchkin, etc… ?

Will the game engine be generic in nature so that you could potentially create multiple styles of card games with it, or will it be specific to the type of card game we intend to make?

I think if we can hash out these details ahead of time it will save a lot of time later on when we can really focus on coding and not basic design decisions.

Any thoughts?

- Josh

I think the "ahead of time" idea actually kind of ruins the fun/intention of the 24-hour XNA development scenario. The last session, Matt, Trey and I were just playing it by ear with only a light game design of "Player has to get out of dungeon."

You are supposed to spend time when you first get there to plan the design of the game and/or engine you're creating. That's part of the insane fun.

Just my two cents.

That's a good point.

It's true that we had a lot of fun last time just playing it by ear; coming up with a basic idea at the beginning and hashing it out as we went along.  I think the important thing for projects like this is to set nothing in stone, i.e. no design documents built up ahead of time.

One possibility would be for us to collect our ideas separately, jot everything down in a notebook, then we can all come together at the game jam and compare notes; build up our project from there.

Anybody else have an opinion?

I agree with the everyone getting some notes together about how you want to proceed once we get there, but nothing other than that. It would help drive the discussion better so we don't waste so much time when we get there :D

After all, one of the purposes of these meetings is learning to think on your feet. :-)

If there are any objections than please voice them, otherwise we'll hold off further discussions on our next project until the day of.

Just a reminder, our 2nd jam session is scheduled for this Saturday
starting at 10am, going until 10am Sunday. We'll be meeting at Rick
Spencer's House, 5526 Castleview Lane, Garland 75044. He has asked us
all to bring $5 each to cover foodstuffs.

We spoke before about creating some sort of RPG-style card game. Try
to show up on time, and bring your ideas with you, so that we have
time to hash out what we'll be working on.

Unfortunately I just got signed up for work. Our game is getting into crunch mode, so I have to work the weekends for a bit.

I hope you all have fun - it was great last time!

That's a nice perk. :-)

I'm constantly reading about how game developers get burned out after
working on a project like yours, it's good to hear that this isn't
always the case!

You're working long hours on stuff you enjoy. You might not be as quick to pop in a game after you get home, but most guys up here aren't like that. Some will play different genres of games just so they can try something else, but alot of people still playing FPS because there are so many good ones out there: Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Half-life  (I <3 Valve)

The huge perk about game development (and this is mostly aimed at you Trey because I know you're apprehensive about joining this work force) is the people you work with. Everyone is as passionate as you were during our first jam session. They're great guys with some of the best personalities you can find in a work place.

I hope you eventually get into game development - it seems to make you happy.
