Hi,

We have a Moody 376 and our boat mechanic informed me that our "water muffler" was leaking and needed to be replaced.  He has been unable to find one and I fear that having one fabricated will be very costly.  If anyone knows of a source or has any advice, it would be deeply appreciated.

What manufacturer/model engine do you have?

I had to replace a water muffler on a previous Thornycroft engine and
I had no problems purchasing it from Thronycroft directly in England.
SHipping cost hurt a bit but I also purchase some other parts I needed
so I made the shipping do double duty. Here is their web address.
http://www.thornycroftparts.co.uk/storepage207758.aspx

Hope they can help you,

Peter

Peter,

I never thought of Thornycroft.

Many thanks for the link.

I'll go try to figure out the correct part.

Best regards,

-Larry

I believe many Moodys were equipped with off the shelf water mufflers.
Mikhaya had a Vetus water lift. When I re powered, I replaced it with bigger, different design Vetus. There are other brands out there that will work just as well. You don't have to be tied to a specific brand, just size it for your engine, hose diameter and length of hose run to the back of the boat, or if you have a Vetus, just buy the same model and its an easy replacement.

Peter and Larry,
You don't have to go to Emgland for a replacement. They are readily available here in the US.

Matt's email made me think about the part I bought from Thorncroft. It was not the muffler it was the "water mixing elbow". Larry when you mentioned that you might have to have one fabricated that made me think of the water mixing elbow instead of the muffler. I was about to have one of those fabricated until I contacted Thornycroft.  Matt is absolutely correct that you can get a water muffler from many other manufacturers.

Peter and Matt,

Thanks to both of you.

I'm wondering if I've named the part improperly.  Its a stainless steel canister which sits on the port side in the engine compartment but not on the engine.
When I looked at the Thorneycroft site the canister certainly didn't look like the "wet silencer" photo on their site. I'll have to double check with my mechanic
whether we're talking about the same thing.

In any event, many thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

No problem.
We're in the Bahamas and have good wifi connection.
If that canister has a big diameter hose running to it from the engine, and another big diameter (maybe 2"diameter) hose coming out of it and running to the back of your boat, it indeed is your water lift muffler.
I had a previous boat that had one just like that. The industry has since learned some lessons in material sciences and we know know that the worst material you can use for a water lift muffler is stainless steel. They will all leak eventually due to oxygen starvation corrosion.
I have installed fiberglass water lifts and the Vetus one I have now is molded plastic.
A search for water lift mufflers should reveal a plethora of data and options.
Just check for your requirements, hose size, mounting space, etc. and I bet you can easily find and purchase one on line for a reasonable price, maybe even under $100 on eBay that will work just fine for you.

Matt,

After your reply I looked at Vetus and I'm certain you are correct that it is the water lift. Molded plastic makes a lot more sense.

My memory is hazy but I think we replaced the original 15 years ago due to the corrosion.

The Bahamas sound great about now.

The only concern I have with plastic is that if you lose your water supply to the engine, the muffler could melt.
Still I have a plastic Vetus.
I don't know what size you need, but I saw Centeks, Vernalifts, and Vetus, with 2" diam hose nipples going for from $63 for a fiberglass cylinder type, to $125 for a Vetus.

Hi Larry,

Do a google for:  centek water lift mufflers

Lots of option in the us… including West Marine.

We blew our T-98 muffler out in Corsica and ended up getting our replacement Centek from the states.

Matt,

We're going to have to measure the size and hose diameters. Once I know the exact size I'll probably get a back up
since they're so much cheaper than stainless.

Thanks

I'm guessing that if you install a Centek, or Vetus, it will be the last one you'll need. Backup isn't necessary unless you plan to cross oceans.
Glad your search was productive.

Reading all these posts with interest. When any of you are finally tired of dealing with diesel engine issues - I can help you out with switching to electric propulsion!  No more water mufflers among many other issues.
:-)  Sorry, just couldn't resist.

I'll be banging down your door when I can motor for 4 days straight and recharge in an hour for four more.  I think your solution is perfect for local sailing, getting away and to the dock... I'm surprised more boats don't offer it. But for the distance cruiser, I don't think we're there yet.
For my last boat, a day/weekend sailor. I think electric will be quite nice.

I know Matt, we all are looking forward to that. There are billions of dollars going into battery technology right now and eventually we are going to see some real progress in the amount of power storage in batteries - hopefully before we are all too old to enjoy it! Until then, well, we work with what we've got. Our cruisers, and we've done several long distance cruisers now, are going diesel-electric just like the big cruise ships, subs, and freighters. For now it's a good way to use the resources we have more efficiently and wisely. Still not as powerful as using pure diesel power, but for some, it is a decision that works for them. We'll go that route with On to Fortune, once we can get back to working on her again. Right now, all our energy and money has been going into this business. It's fun - but I really miss having my boat! When we finally get to the conversion I'll be letting all of you know. Until then, I'll be sailing virtually with you!
