The first Jon Hart item you ever saw was probably this backpack. You wondered where such a special bag came from and then started noticing Jon Hart ID wallets and makeup cases everywhere. Coated canvas is a durable material made to withstand the elements. As a result, you are likely to keep it for a very long time and it may become dirty or absorb dyes from clothing. Cleaning coated canvas is simple and easy to do. Options include, Microfiber cloth, Warm soap and water, Hand sanitizer (no more than 70% alcohol) or Convertible car top cleaner. The natural leather trim on your item can withstand almost any adventure. Due to its high quality, you shouldn't need to treat or condition it with normal use. Unwanted stains or marks can often be treated with a leather cleaner designed for vegetable-tanned leather.

Bought this pack last year and was able to use it this year. Went on a 5 day trip. Pack weight was 41lbs and it held it amazingly. Have a few issues with putting water bottles back in the side pocket but was able to do it when I turned the bottle upside down. Love the strechy fabric on the back. It can fit an amazing amount of stuff. I also used the back pad to change shoes several times due to some creek crossings. The fact that this pack is 2lbs is amazing. I will be buying another one for my wife soon.

I loved my 25 year old Kelty backpack but a friend convinced me it was too heavy (6.5 lbs.) So I chose this pack because I'm a pocket girl, I like to be organized and know where everything is. I ordered the 65 because I felt the 45 would be too small. I was pleasantly surprised. This pack is not only light it's VERY comfortable, which, at 64 was my highest criteria. I love the pockets and the middle zipper is super convenient. If I was forced to complain about something I would say the side pocket closures are kind of hard to really cinch up, but that's a very small thing and I wouldn't have let it stop me from buying this pack. I just packed everything for this weekend's coming trip and it's 15.42 pounds total. Nice. I completely recommend this pack...you won't be disappointed.

this is my official big purchase for me and my new backpacking hobby. i was using a teton 85l for over a year. as i start to dial in my gear as far as what i need and what i dont need that 85l was way overkill for what i was doing which was just short 3 day trips. so i googled 60l back packs and this one come up. so i did some research and ended up buying it. my first trip out was 32 miles for 2 days and this pack carried so well. my pack weight came in at 28lbs. i would highly recommend this pack. so far so good. great product at a great price.

But when he starts talking about backpacks, he dips into a "back in my day" tone that makes you think of a creaky rocking chair and suspenders: "You know, Lee, when I was in school, no one had a backpack!

Since my first day of kindergarten in 1995, my JanSport and I were inseparable. It was a fluorescent green SuperBreak model. My dad wrote my name on the front with a Sharpie (he did his best to match the JanSport font).

Ah, yes, the book strap. An ingenious contraption. But really, just a leather belt. I doubt you've ever seen one in use, but you've almost certainly seen them in the movies. You wrapped the strap around your books and carried the bundle like a bag or threw it over your shoulder.

Gerry Cunningham, owner and creator of Gerry Outdoors in Boulder, Colo., is credited with the two biggest innovations that would, decades later, lead to the modern school backpack: the use of zippers and nylon for daypacks.

According to the company's website, Cunningham was an outdoor enthusiast unsatisfied with the rucksacks of his day. So in 1938, he made his own, with two zippered compartments for easy reach while rock climbing.

It sold well, and over the years Cunningham improved it. In 1967, Gerry's Teardrop Backpack made a big leap forward: nylon. Canvas had been the go-to fabric. Nylon was stronger, more durable and lighter. It quickly became the norm.

There was a lot of excitement about the outdoors around this time. Gear companies were popping up left and right, each seeking new and better equipment and clothing. Many of them are still around today: The North Face, Kelty, Patagonia.

"Murray was dating this girl named Jan Lewis, and she had a home sewing machine," Yowell recalled recently. She also had a teaching degree, but there were too many teachers in Seattle at the time. They brought her aboard as a partner.

"He took a pile of his chemistry textbooks, wrapped some nylon fabric around them, stapled it together and said, 'Will you make a backpack for my books?' " Briggs recalls. It took her a few days. The new pack was called the Cricket.

He loved it. In 1982, the L.L. Bean catalogue featured the Book Pack, and it quickly became the company's top-selling product. "It just exploded," Kitchel recalls. "We were selling tens of thousands of them in almost no time."

You've probably seen articles about the health risks of kids weighed down by their backpacks. The American Chiropractic Association even wrote some guidelines to prevent "backpack misuse." Wheeled packs became a popular option in response.

Enter the Digital Burrito: JanSport's attempt to get ahead of the curve. This tortilla-shaped product wraps electronic cords neatly together. While another JanSport offering, the SuperBreak Sleeve, is a backpack but is super slim for holding your laptop.

In an interview a few weeks ago, Skip Yowell told me: "Last year I traveled to Jakarta, Korea, Japan, Nicaragua, Indonesia, the Philippines, and I saw JanSport packs wherever I went." It made him smile: "You never get tired of it."

(Note: While I was reporting this story, Skip Yowell died at his home in Morland, Kan. At the end of our phone interview, he asked for my address so he could send me his book. I got it in the mail with a thoughtful and considerate note just days before he passed.)

The downward slope of your shoulder profile usually determines strap preference. You can assess your shoulder slope profile by looking in a mirror or having a friend look at the angle of your shoulder from the base of your neck to your shoulder point.

TIP: If you have a short torso but a larger upper body, you may need a slightly longer strap. If you are very large in the upper body, you might need XL shoulder straps. Contact us, and we would be happy to make these customizations so your pack is comfortable and fits well.

The Circuit pack utilizes a 1.2 oz carbon fiber and Delrin suspension hoop in conjunction with a dense internal foam frame and a single aluminum stay to give you excellent back panel support, maximum load control, weight transfer, and pack rigidity without limiting your range of movement.

Winner of The Trek 2023 Best Gear Award and the Treeline Review Best Gear 2024 Award. The most popluar pack on the Pacific Crest Trail for four years running and the 2023 most used pack on the CDT according to the Halfway Anywhere Annual Survey of PCT Thru Hikers.

A: Every bear canister on the market will fit into the Circuit vertically. Smaller bear canisters may fit in the Circuit horizontally. Keep in mind it is best to pack something between the hard sided canister and the bottom of the pack.

A: The top of the pack closes like a dry bag (also known as a rolltop) very similar to what river runners use to create a water resistant seal for their gear bags. The back of the collar is slightly taller than the front. Once you are packed, the collar can be rolled down upon itself to effectively create a barrier to water penetration. Once rolled, each side of the collar can be buckled to the sides of the pack or the two yellow buckles on the top can also be fastened to each other.
