We are looking for a programmer who can develop a database to gather
and classify information on institutions and documents that deal with
global media policy. Data will be inserted manually through a web
interface. For each document/institution/etc. a variety of different
data types will be gathered, using open text boxes, check-boxes and
drop-down menus.
The web interface should allow users to insert data into the database,
and have the potential to include (at a later stage) further features
such as news, background texts, and a forum.
We estimate 1-2 months for the completion of the project (database and
front-end). We assume that Ruby on Rails would be the best option for
implementing this, but we also consider PHP (with Drupal or Joomla).
Ideally, the programmer would have an interest in working with an
academic partner and be based in or near Montreal. The project is led
by a research team at McGill University, Montreal.
The future stages of the project will include creating visual
(semantic, cognitive) maps from the data in the database, to explore
connections and patterns. Experience in this field would be an
advantage.
