Saturation Knob is an easy-to-use, versatile way to add tape-saturation-like distortion to your tracks. The knob controls the amount of saturation, and you can switch between three different distortion characteristics. With the switch set to Neutral, the entire frequency spectrum of the sound gets distorted when you turn up the Saturation knob. Put it on Keep High, and the saturation will mainly affect the lower part of the frequency spectrum, while the top end stays clear. With Keep Low selected, the low end will retain its clear sound, and only the high-frequency components of the sound will get distorted.

To get your copy of Saturation Knob, go to -One/download, submit your email address to Softube, and download the extension. Once the extension is downloaded, drag it onto the Studio One Start Page to install it, and enjoy the sweet, saturated goodness!

It also helps to know that there are many different types of saturation - these come from the different types of electronic components that can be saturated, like tubes, tape, transistors, transformers, and so on.

These different forms of saturation introduce different harmonic formations, different points of saturation, and different knees of compression. As a result, each sounds different and amplifies different aspects of the instrument or mix.

The second function is Saturation Type which offers 3 settings. Keep high creates high order harmonic distortion, neutral is both low and high order harmonic distortion, and keep low introduces low order harmonic distortion.

We can observe how switching between these settings introduces different harmonic formations - so when or if you use this plugin, keep in mind that these harmonics are going to form in relation to the fundamental frequency of the signal the plugin is affecting.

Then of course you have your drive, which introduces harmonic distortion and soft-knee compression. Like the last plugin we looked out, you increase this to increase the amplitude of the distortion.

Similar to the last plugin we covered, you can introduce different harmonic formations with different distortion types. You can increase the drive with the main dial, and pan the drive to left and right, or mid and side.

But, what I find most impressive about this plugin is the modulation section, with which you can make almost every aspect of the plugin program dependent. In other words, you can trigger functions like distortion, saturation, and tone controls, and others using modulation.

This great and free plugin is one I'm using the most in the mixing process. From subtle warmth to dirty distortion, this little one knob tool is very useful to add analog dirt and make up gain on your tracks. It's my secret tool to distort the electric bass and sometimes on guitars. The keep modes is the essential feature of this plugin to increase low end or boost highs

My most used free effect. Hands down. This guy has 2 crappy controls but because of the distortion engine its so useful. The way it adds subtle harmonics at lower settings but can sound like an overloaded opamp when cranked up is marvelous. Throw in the ability to only distort the highs or lows and you have one of the most useful distortions ever. I like to use this in conjunction with other multiband saturation plugs sometimes to really tailor things.... I just wish it had a crossover control for the low to high split but beggars can't be choosers, they give it away for nothing, right?

Saturation plugins are the secret weapon of tons of world class mixers, partly because they recreate many of the desirables sonic characteristics of analogue tape recording. Adding harmonics and distortion is pretty obvious to most of us, but another way to describe this is that saturation increases the perceived loudness of a signal. It can actually clamp down on and control peak levels on a loud instrument with a lot of transients.

The weekly AES meeting on February 26, 2024 started off with introductions between office holders and attendees. The icebreaker question for this week was "what is your favorite piece of audio equipment that you own"? Then co-presidents, Vickie Cardenas and Tristan Telischuk, formally introduced the office holders of AES CRAS student chapter. Three new office holders will be added in the future. The meeting continued with both co-presidents explaining what AES does and the benefits to having a membership. They also went over student pricing and the resources that come with it.

Upcoming events were brought up after the introductions and general AES information. Universal Audio will be visiting CRAS on March 4, 2024 and speaking at the AES meeting that night. Warm Audio will be doing an event at CRAS on March 14, 2024 at night and gear demos during the day. CRAS is also hosting a Community Night on March 16, 2024, which is an event where students and staff get the opportunity to perform or meet in a non-academic setting.

The main topic for this meeting was "Networking Techniques", which is the topic that attendees voted on at the meeting last week. The importance of networking in any field was discussed and how to go about doing it. An emphasis was also put on the importance of maintaining connections as well as building them. It was recommended that students go to events, make good first impressions, have business cards ready and to take any opportunity that comes their way. A video created by Indeed that explained the basics of networking was played. A TedTalk video was played after that. The video had a man that talked about his experiences with networking and how lucrative it was to succeed in his career.

The next part of the meeting involved talking about the various groups that CRAS has to offer. Current active subgroups include music creation/songwriting, jammers and sound design. Other groups at CRAS include Women of Audio and CRAS Mentor Program. Co-presidents went over how one can start a new subgroup. Then they went over how the sound design contest works, the rules and potential prizes for winners. Attendees get a few audio clips and try to creatively make sounds out of them. The entries are played at an AES meeting and attendees get to vote on their favorite sounds.

Finally, the plugin of the week was revealed, which is a saturation knob created by Softube. A short video was played to explain what the plugin does and potential applications. To end the night, everyone said their goodbyes to both co-presidents, Vickie Cardenas and Tristan Telischuk, as this was their last AES meeting.
