Hello Montpelier Bikes-interested folks,

As you may have read in the local media, the Montpelier Energy Team is hosting another "Energy Town Meeting" tomorrow night @ 6:30 pm at Montpelier High School.  As gasoline hovers at $4/gal and fuel oil at $4.50-$6, energy issues are finally hitting mainstream awareness.

Thursday, May 29th • 6:30-8:30 pm
Montpelier High School
An open house precedes the meeting, starting at 6 pm.

There will be TWO breakout sessions focused on bicycling, one in each time slot.

The Montpelier Bikes Project is using this meeting as an opportunity to launch our pilot bicycle ambassadors program and other educational efforts for bicycling in Montpelier, and to begin our inventory of bicycle parking and bicycle "hot spots" in the city -- places we want to work with our DPW and/or VTrans to fix, add bicycle lanes, or recognize bicycles at traffic lights, etc.    The Montpelier Bikes Project came out of the first energy town meeting, held March 2007.  Our steering committee includes Carrie Baker Stahler, Colin Gunn, Sarah Galbraith, Suzanne Hechmer, Bill Merrylees and myself.

Many people attended the bicycle discussion table at the Montpelier enVision meeting on transportation back in March.  This meeting is a follow-up, and we hope that you will be able to join us, give your input, and get involved.

Volunteers will be needed to:
 • Count bicyclists in the City at key intersections.
 • Become bicycle ambassadors - to attend neighborhood events, serve as "bike buddies" for new commuters or bicyclists, lead bike trains for elementary school kids, and reach out to other bicyclists for riding tips.
 • Assist in data entry of our bicycling parking & hot spots survey
 • Take our survey, and recruit your friends to do the same!

If you can't make tomorrow night's meeting but are interested in a particular aspect of the program, please let us know.

Hope to see you tomorrow night.

Becka Roolf
for the Montpelier Bikes Project steering committee
