According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in its last annual reporting period, there were 306,086 injury deaths in the United States, or 92.2 deaths per 100,000 population. Motor vehicle traffic deaths accounted for 45,404 deaths nationwide. Accidents were cited as the third leading cause of death in Virginia, with the CDC counting 3,922 accidental deaths in the state for its last reporting period. The state ranks 41st in the nation for accidental deaths.
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Provide factual information without admitting fault. Avoid making statements that imply fault, even if you think you may be partially responsible. Let the investigation determine liability.
Your attorney will conduct a thorough investigation, gathering evidence such as accident reports, witness statements, medical records, and any other relevant documentation. Based on the gathered evidence, your lawyer will assess the legal strength of your case and identify liable parties.
Your attorney may send a demand letter to the responsible party or their insurance company, outlining your case, the extent of your injuries, and the compensation you are seeking. Your lawyer will engage in negotiations with the opposing party to reach a fair settlement. They will advocate for your rights and work to secure the compensation you deserve. If negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory resolution, your attorney may file a lawsuit on your behalf. This formal legal action initiates the court process.
Both parties exchange information and evidence through a process called discovery, which may involve depositions, interrogatories, and document requests. Before going to trial, there may be a mediation or settlement conference where both parties attempt to reach an agreement with the help of a neutral third party.
Throughout these steps, a personal injury lawyer plays a vital role by offering legal expertise, negotiating on your behalf, ensuring proper documentation, and advocating for your rights. Their goal is to maximize your compensation and guide you through the legal process with as little stress as possible.
Virginia has a statute of limitations that sets a deadline for filing personal injury lawsuits. In most cases, you must file your lawsuit within two years from the date of the injury. Failing to do so could result in the court dismissing your case.
Virginia imposes caps on certain damages in medical malpractice cases. Non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering, are capped at a specific amount, which can impact the total compensation you may receive.
Virginia places limits on punitive damages in personal injury cases. Punitive damages are intended to punish the wrongdoer for particularly egregious conduct. The cap is based on the amount of compensatory damages awarded.
Understanding these laws is crucial for building a strong personal injury case in Virginia. Consulting with a knowledgeable local personal injury attorney is advisable, as they can provide specific guidance based on the details of your situation and help navigate the complexities of the legal system. The Virginia-based lawyers at Allen & Allen are well-versed in the specific laws that affect claims here.

Whether that was in preparing your child to come to school daily, volunteering for the various activities and events that took place this year, or sending in treats and appreciation to our staff this spring, we thank you all for your care and collaboration in support of our students and staff.
We would like to have as many of these completed as soon as possible as this helps us plan for the coming school year. If you have questions, please call the office at 734-997-1210, or email al...@aaps.k12.mi.us

Allen Summer Playground Meet-Ups
The Allen Staff is excited to offer 3 different opportunities this summer to come together for some fun and community building. Students and their families are invited to join us for Allen summer playground meet-ups on the following dates and times.
All playground meet-ups will take place on the Allen School playground. Incoming PreK, Y5, and K students will meet on the lower elementary playground (which is fenced in and nearest the school parking lot). Rising 1st through 5th graders will meet on the big playground on top of the hill.
A great way to keep reading this summer is to involve the whole family with the Ann Arbor District Library's SUMMER GAME. Everyone can play and earn points through reading, gathering codes from around town, and participating in library events. Just to get you started, the AADL has partnered with AAPS libraries; CLICK HERE to find a scavenger hunt where a special game code is hidden in the link to each AAPS school. Click on the school name, find the summer game code, and add it to your SUMMER GAME account when it opens on Thursday, June 13th. Happy reading!
A big 'thank you' from the Parent Council to everyone who participated and volunteered in our many events. Over the course of the school year your support helped us fund teacher grants and field trips, and helped with supporting equity during the Scholastic book fair. We also hosted the Fun Run, Trunk or Treat, Skate nights at Buhr Park, Multicultural Night, Disability Awareness Workshop, Science Olympiad, School Musical, the Country Fair, and more! We look forward to next year! Thank You!
