Hi Ocean Friendly Gardeners!

Just checking in to see when might be best to schedule our garden demo days. It appears that rain may be coming sooner than later, so time is of the essence.

So far we have accomplished:

-picking out our seed mix (-pretty coastal flowers!)

-taking pre-demo photos of the site (-thanks, Jenny!)

-measuring the site area (-thanks, Travis!)

…now we just need to tear things up. I was thinking that Friday afternoons could be good. I would prefer earlier than later, but that’s just me. What do you think? Could you make it this Friday (or Fridays in general)?

If we do Friday afternoons, I could captain this Friday, October 7 or next Friday, Oct 15 and commit to bringing some demo gear (i.e. several shovels, etc.) and lemonade.

Please let me know…thanks! And once we pick a date, please tell your friends =)

Sarah

Fridays would be perfect for us! We can begin this Friday. Would you like for us to bring our own shovels as well? --Jenny

Hey all,

Sorry I've been off-radar but as I've mentioned before, I'm pretty much gone all fall and into the early winter. However, I am looking forward to helping lots in the spring once my travels are done! Something to keep in mind is that at least some of the folks here have work on Fridays (like the guys at Rana Creek) and that will probably limit your turnout. I did pass by the Green Spot while in town the other day and it looks like things are getting underway, which is great!

Also, I touched base briefly with Bridget Hoover at MBNMS the other day and she suggested talking to the planners for the City of PG about any site-specific metrics. She did not have a methodology for collecting runoff from a plot of land like ours since all of their work is at the storm drains. We did not get a chance to talk about running water samples via MBNMS but I'll see her again at a meeting in a few weeks, when there should be more time to talk about cooperative efforts.

My suggestion for now is that if someone can get ahold of something like a couple of old Nalgene bottles to collect a bit of runoff during whatever early flush events we get, then those samples can be immediately frozen until there's time to filter & process. The key part is for the sample container (preferably plastic) to be clean and then rinsed with the sampled runoff several times (3x's) before collecting the actual sample. This ensures that what we measure from the bottle is the sample and not some residue. Sterile sample bottles would get the same treatment. A good cold home freezer will do for storing the sample so long as the container is tight -- probably wise to put the container into a clean ziploc or something clean & sealed as well. As for where to collect, without any guiding methodology for this, I'd grab samples from either edge (upper & lower) of the property so we could compare what's coming in versus running off. Metadata to record would be time, location, name of sampler, and any observations about the relative volume coming off the property.

Beyond that, I have filters and such up at BML, which I can contribute but I won't be up there for awhile (its fine for samples to sit frozen until then though). Samples of even 30-50ml can be useful but closer to 1L would be better, to allow for additional chemistry work should the opportunity arise. I also have some seawater samples I'll eventually be running at UCD for trace metals (probably in the spring) -- I can sneak a few more samples from this in on those runs though this won't get at things like pesticides. I'll work on contacting some folks on potentially looking at that.

I'd also recommend getting someone to take pictures during the same runoff event (and possibly others throughout the season).

Anyway, best of luck with everything and I'll try to touch base to help when possible...

Cheers,
L.
